There are moments when the world feels beautifully full.

Tonight, at sunset on Lake Michigan in Chicago, Sofia and her friend reminded me once again how fortunate I am to have spent more than 50 years looking through a camera—and to have been welcomed into so many lives and places around the world.

I’m back in the United States to sign copies of FROM THE HEART, my new 325-page retrospective of photographs. It is a book about humanity, connection, and the extraordinary privilege of witnessing this world through my camera. And throughout it all, there is one constant: my return home to Paris, where my heart is always buoyed by tenderness and love.

Some places stay in your heart forever. Michigan is one of mine.
Back again in northern Michigan, standing on the shores of Lake Michigan, holding my new retrospective in my hands—325 photographs made around the world over more than 50 years.
And here, in this state so dear to me, are photographs that come from the deepest place in me.
Anna and Flander, married nearly 60 years, subsistence farmers—photographs of their lives, their dignity, their tenderness.
And Poletown, in Detroit—a community I photographed before it was destroyed to make way for a General Motors Cadillac factory. A neighborhood, a community, a piece of Detroit that would never be the same.
These photographs are FROM MY HEART.
They carry the people I have known, the places I have witnessed, and the stories I have spent a lifetime trying to preserve.

This morning at the Paris metro, I witnessed a simple, beautiful moment as a couple shared a goodbye kiss before parting ways.
I introduced myself and had the privilege of meeting Louis and Chloé. It was an honor to send them this photograph.
I’ve spent much of my life covering the world’s major wars, beginning in Beirut in 1982. Yet I have always returned home to Paris, where my heart is renewed by moments of love like theirs.
That is why I continue to share these photographs of love. They are a reflection of my belief—and my hope—that love will always conquer war and hate.
Louis & Chloé, thank you for reminding us all what truly matters. ❤️

Happy Birthday to President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and their beautiful family.

In 2008, I was given one of the greatest honors of my life—to travel across America for several days photographing then President-elect Obama during his historic campaign. I knew I was witnessing history, but I also witnessed something more enduring: grace, dignity, hope, and humanity.

President Obama remains one of the greatest men I have ever had the privilege to photograph. I share these photographs today with profound gratitude for him, for First Lady Michelle Obama, for their extraordinary leadership, and for the values they continue to represent in our world.

I also want to acknowledge Pete Souza, whose remarkable work as President Obama’s White House photographer has inspired so many of us who believe in the power of photography to preserve history and illuminate the human spirit.

These photographs are made with gratitude, admiration, and hope.

Coming home to Paris during a lifetime covering wars and revolutions, I realize what a privilege it has been to also photograph the era of the supermodels.

Over the years, I appreciate how much their lives often resemble those of photojournalists: extraordinary discipline, stamina, the ability to perform under relentless pressure, humility, grace, professionalism, constant travel around the world, and the quiet challenge of solitude in hotel rooms far from home.

I share these photographs with deep respect and admiration for these remarkable women. I'm honored that many of these images are included in my new book, FROM THE HEART, now available for pre-order at www.davidturnley.com.

Some moments divide your life into “before” and “after.” September 11, 2001, was one of them.

That morning, just blocks north of the Twin Towers, I heard an enormous bang while getting ready for a 9 a.m. appointment. I stepped into the street and saw flames pouring from one of the towers. A plane had struck.

I ran back for my cameras and film and headed toward the towers. Then the second plane hit.

A huge gasp went through the crowd. In that instant, everyone understood: this was no accident.

I made it within a couple of blocks when the first tower collapsed. With police officers, I rushed into a building lobby as a vast cloud of dust and debris swept through the streets.

Later, I reached Ground Zero and waited alongside heroic firefighters for the flames to subside. Then I entered the rubble with some of the first firefighters on the scene—men driven by one purpose: to find and save anyone they could.

I will never forget their courage.

Not a day goes by that I do not think about those firefighters, that day, and the extraordinary selflessness I witnessed. Their courage reminds me of firefighters everywhere who run toward danger to protect others.

Today, my heart goes especially to the firefighters who bravely helped save Notre-Dame during the devastating fire in Paris, and to those fighting the fires now burning across southern France and Spain.

Their courage, sacrifice, and determination to protect lives, communities, and our shared heritage deserve our deepest gratitude.
