In Tenganan, the oldest Bali Aga village, the ritual of « Mekare-Kare » (or « Perang Pandan ») has been performed for over 700 years.
Each year during Usaba Sambah (the village’s most sacred month), young men fight with thorny pandan leaves and rattan shields.
This is an offering to Dewa Indra, god of war, for protection and harvest.
It’s also a rite of passage into manhood. Every duel ends the same way. An embrace. Nothing carried forward.

À Tenganan, le plus ancien village Bali Aga, le rituel « Mekare-Kare » (ou « Perang Pandan ») est pratiqué depuis plus de 700 ans.
Chaque année, pendant Usaba Sambah (le mois le plus sacré du village), de jeunes hommes s’affrontent avec des feuilles de pandan épineuses et des boucliers en rotin.
C’est une offrande à Dewa Indra, dieu de la guerre, pour la protection et la récolte.
C’est aussi un rite de passage vers l’âge adulte. Chaque duel se termine de la même façon, par une accolade, sans animosité.
