📜 𝗧ʜᴇ 𝗧ᴇ𝘅ᴛ ✏️

On a sacred mound in north Paris, imbued with places of reverence at every turn - the odd, red-bricked Saint-Jean de Montmartre, Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre, of course, the now-cowed Saint-Pierre de Montmartre with its micro-cemetary, the charming Saint-Vincent Cemetery and, évidemment, the monumental Montmartre Cemetery itself...
..you wouldn't expect to find the city's biggest annual booze-up blocking its narrow cobbled streets.

That's what happens every October, though, when the pocket-handkerchief-sized Clos Montmartre vineyard celebrates the uncorking of the previous year's harvest.

Having taken vows of alcoholic celibacy nine years ago, I don't imbibe myself, but plenty do, religiously, I might add - santé!

There are plenty of surprises to be had in Paris if you simply raise your gaze to the skies, or even just the ceilings and roofs.

Unfortunately, most people walk around with their eyes dragged down to the shiny device in their hand. The three guys in this photo are no exception.

Only the happy smiley lady on the wall isn't mesmerised by a luminous oblong; she's enthralled with a camera lens instead. Think I'll go see some hills (and steal a sneaky snap when no-one's looking)!

You may guess that this cheerful street scene is set in Paris, but where will you find it? The 18th arrondissement's red icon and the steep stairwell give the game away. We're on the route some unfit folks regret taking - the long spiral staircase up from the Abbesses metro in Montmartre.

The station's street-level entrance is a gem too, with its rare glass art nouveau canopy by Hector Guimard, in an idyllic little square, or 'place' (of the Abbotesses), rather.

So, if you're flagging around step number 39, 64 or 108, take a break and enjoy some of the images decorating the walls; photos going down and paintings on the way up. And pretend you're glad you didn't take the lift!

There's not much remarkable about this photo if it's not that it's the first time I've shown the entire "I Love You" wall and at a perfectly conventional angle to boot!

Decorating this wall at Abbesses since 2000 (tho' it seems longer), "I love you" is written over 300 times in different languages and tourists enjoy finding their own country's scrawl amongst the calligraphic chaos!

Walls symbolise division and separation, so the artists wanted to create something that brought people closer. A fun fact is that the shards of red are bits of a broken heart that could, in theory, be put back together again!

I wrote about today's sister photo at the start of this chapter, so here's some random uplifting news.

I climbed three new 'Wainwright' mountains in the Lake District yesterday but the most satisfying peak I conquered was two huge lumps of Lakes Ice Cream.

I also scaled the roof of my parents' garden room to clear a gutter and sweep some moss off that had probably been knocked down from a higher gutter by crows looking for bugs to eat.

If that weren't vertigo-inducing enough, I'm now gazing up at the giddy heights of 2500 When Lady Eiffel Smiles Chronicles coming up shortly. That's a quarter of ten thousand daily Paris-inspired photos and texts and quite some pile of piffle… 🌀

But what goes up must come down, so come on down from admiring Notre Dame's brand new steeple and read my next WLES, up soon!

📜 𝗧ʜᴇ 𝗧ᴇ𝘅ᴛ ✏️

Having successfully made it through British passport control, I'm effectively on British soil here as I walk across the walkway at Gare du Nord onto the Eurostar waiting to whisk me away to the UK.

No further checks are made before I walk out into the English drizzle at Saint Pancras greeted by the iconic cuddling couple statue. We used to arrive at Waterloo before the terminus moved north of the river Thames in 2007. I generally head north, so that suited me fine.

It always struck me as a bit mean to force the French to arrive in London at a blatant reminder of Napoleon's decisive defeat. Now they are simply reminded of some Roman kid (called Pancras) who got his head chopped off in the year 304 aged 14 for converting to Christianity.

Napoleon knew, though, that the poor believe religion, the wise find it false, and the rulers (like him) use it to advance their own agendas. That's why he hastened to re-establish it as soon as he came to power. I thank God every time English trains actually manage to arrive on time! Big hug? 🤗

I know, I know, I've taken a million shots of A&M over the years, but you have to admit, it cries out to be admired and adulated, doesn't it?

This amazing Jules Vernesque metro platform isn't one of my fabulous recurring themes as such, like Lady Eiffel and blurry birds and ladies in red dresses.

I'm afraid most of my shots of it are pretty much the same but always ineluctable eye-candy, up in yer face!

There is one notable feature here; an actual witch is approaching me in the bottom right, with black hair and a pointy hat and everything!

I knew this was a magical place and now I've got irrefutable proof. Cackle!

An intriguing new position has dropped at the RATP (the Paris train company) ideal for ravers, techno music fans and other partygoers.

If you join the team, you'll be the official "Get-Your-Hands-Up-In-The-Air-Guy", and your job will be to pump your hands up and down in front of confused commuters. No, this isn't a community exercise initiative like Japan's rajio taiso daily calisthenics followed by millions. It's much more down-to-earth than that.

On the line 14 metro at Gare de Lyon, they've recently installed new exit escalators in the middle of the platform but folks still automatically head for the old way out which is now sealed off. ⛔️

This guy frantically indicates the two No Exit signs above his head which everyone ignores. They should add some rail-rockin' beats and get a party going! 🙆‍♂️

I'm grudgingly sacrificing this shot, which should really go in my long-awaiting 'ladies in little red dresses' chapter because... I want to publish it right now!

Even in its non-visitable form, Notre Dame still draws in the tourists, and I can only imagine that'll be amplified tenfold once it's open again.

The faithful will be as keen to do whatever it is they do as the tourists will be to discover what changes, if any, have been made to the inside. Rumours suggest that, if not quite a Disney experience, things have been livened up a bit.

I doubt there'll be a Staggering Cross Parade daily (and twice on Sundays), but maybe a few more lights? It's 'a place of worship', of course, so they can't go too mad.

A flower! That's all you need. To enjoy a few seconds marvelling at the miracle of life. To attempt to create an original photo using nature's everyday gift to us all. Imagining metaphors for birth and beauty and bowing back down to it all. Remembering the most iconic song from one of my favourite old groups: Genesis. A flower?!

Mais oui, a French flower, of course, although here in the windy and watery northwest of England as I write, I could be tempted to offer you a Lakeland bloom. Is it a daisy or a 'marguerite', a marigold or even a dahlia? Not knowing flowers, I'll settle for 'that yellow one'!
