Scorpaena porcus: the Mediterranean master of camouflage

Meet the black scorpionfish, a bottom-dwelling ambush predator perfectly designed to disappear. Its rough skin, algae-like texture and stillness turn it into part of the seafloor, while venomous dorsal spines provide excellent “do not touch” protection.
It waits motionless for unlucky crustaceans and small fish to wander too close — efficiency at its finest.

Meet the Saddled seabream (Oblada melanura), a small but unmistakable fish of the Mediterranean Sea and Eastern Atlantic.
That black spot near the tail? It’s not just decoration – it’s a decoy against predators, making attackers aim for the wrong end. Nature’s version of a smoke bomb.

They usually gather in schools near rocky shores and seagrass beds, feeding on small invertebrates, algae, and whatever the tide brings. Humans, of course, like them grilled. Because apparently camouflage isn’t enough when you’re delicious.

Fun fact: despite their modest size (rarely above 30 cm), they are important indicators of coastal ecosystem health – where seabreams thrive, the habitat is usually doing fine.

Meet the Thalassoma pavo, also known as the ornate wrasse.
A rainbow in motion, this Mediterranean gem is more than just beauty — it plays a key role in reef ecosystems, patrolling rocky habitats and keeping balance.
Sometimes nature outshines art. 🌊🐟✨

Meet Torquigener flavimaculosus, a pufferfish species that has entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal (Lessepsian migration).
Beautiful and fascinating, yet also a reminder of how human-made connections can reshape ecosystems.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, this small spotted puffer is now part of the Aegean seascape. Its presence raises questions about invasive species, biodiversity balance and the fragile health of our seas.

Not every underwater encounter is just about beauty – sometimes it’s about biology, adaptation and conservation.
