This is a statue of Toña la Negra 😍 Toña la Negra was born Antonia del Carmen Peregrino Álvarez. She came from the La Huaca neighborhood of Heroica Veracruz, the port and largest city of the Mexican state of Veracruz. Toña was called “la Negra” (the black woman) because of her Haitian ancestry. She rose to fame as an actress and singer, singing some of Agustín Lara’s famous boleros and canciones. Lara was also from Veracruz, and boleros and canciones are musical genres from Cuba. These genres are characterized by their mixture of sounds from Africa, Europe, and the Americas. If you ever have the chance to visit Veracruz, don’t miss the opportunity to dance with her, which is what one local man said I should do!
