In this new video series, Paris Photo explores some of the key concepts that have shaped the history of photography.

10 voices. 10 words. 200 years of photography.

↘️ In this episode, , Professor of the History of Photography at Sorbonne University, reflects on the notion of “Technological Revolution”, tracing the technological shifts that have transformed the medium, from glass plates and silver gelatin prints to digital photography and AI-generated imagery.
As photography enters a new era, Michel Poivert examines the shift from recording reality to generating images, questioning what remains photographic in the age of artificial intelligence.

A series produced as part of the Bicentenary of Photography.

— William Eggleston

Born in 1939 in Memphis, Tennessee, William Eggleston is a pioneering figure of color photography. Since the 1960s, he has made the everyday his primary subject.

In “Untitled (Supermarket Boy with Carts), Memphis” (1965), a young man leans into a row of shopping carts beneath the sharp light of late afternoon. The controlled light and precise framing lend this ordinary scene a singular intensity.

William Eggleston’s work was presented at Paris Photo 2025 by Zander Galerie.

Né en 1939 à Memphis, Tennessee, William Eggleston est une figure majeure de la photographie couleur. Depuis les années 1960, il fait du quotidien son sujet principal.

Dans « Untitled (Supermarket Boy with Carts), Memphis » (1965), un jeune homme se penche sur une rangée de chariots sous la lumière de la fin d’après-midi. La maîtrise de la lumière et la précision du cadrage donnent à cette scène ordinaire une intensité singulière.

Le travail de William Eggleston a été présenté à Paris Photo 2025 par la Galerie Zander.

Last days to discover “photographs”, a solo exhibition by Yoshiyuki Okuyama at Taka Ishii Gallery

Japanese photographer Yoshiyuki Okuyama is known for his intimate and lyrical imagery, spanning photography, film and publishing. Throughout his practice, he explores memory, family ties and the passage of time.

For “photographs”, Okuyama draws from family albums discovered in a house once inhabited by several generations of his family. The series reflects on memory, transmission and the dialogue between personal and collective histories. In many images, figures dissolve into light, turning private photographs into universal spaces for projection and remembrance.

The exhibition is accompanied by a photobook of the same title.

Derniers jours pour découvrir « photographs », une exposition personnelle de Yoshiyuki Okuyama à Taka Ishii Gallery

Figure majeure de la scène photographique japonaise contemporaine, Yoshiyuki Okuyama développe une œuvre sensible où se croisent photographie, cinéma et édition. Son travail explore les notions de mémoire, de famille et de temps.

Pour « photographs », l’artiste puise dans des albums retrouvés dans une maison ayant appartenu à plusieurs générations de sa famille. À travers ces archives intimes, il interroge la transmission et les liens entre histoire personnelle et mémoire collective. Souvent baignées de lumière, les figures semblent s’effacer, laissant place à des images ouvertes dans lesquelles chacun peut projeter ses propres souvenirs.

L’exposition s’accompagne d’un livre photo du même nom.

Can a photobook change the way we experience time?

Presented at Paris Photo 2025, “M/E” unfolds through photographs made in Japan and Iceland. Rather than documenting nature, Rinko Kawauchi builds a sequence where intimate moments and geological forces seem to move within the same rhythm.

Printed on translucent Japanese paper, images appear, disappear and overlap from one page to the next. The book’s structure becomes part of the work itself, slowing down the act of looking and allowing connections to emerge across distance, scale and season.

In this Book Talk, Kawauchi discusses the making of “M/E” with Lesley A. Martin, reflecting on sequencing, materiality and the relationship between photography and the living world.

Un livre peut-il modifier notre perception du temps ?

Présenté à Paris Photo 2025, « M/E » réunit des photographies réalisées au Japon et en Islande. D’une page à l’autre, moments intimes et forces géologiques semblent appartenir à un même cycle.

Imprimées sur un papier japonais translucide, les images apparaissent, disparaissent et se superposent au fil des pages. La structure du livre devient un élément essentiel de l’œuvre, ralentissant le regard et laissant émerger des correspondances entre les lieux, les saisons et les échelles de temps.

Dans ce Book Talk, Rinko Kawauchi revient avec Lesley A. Martin sur la conception de « M/E », la séquence du livre et le rôle de sa matérialité dans l’expérience de lecture.
