Stop chasing stronger contrast.

Your black and white edit needs better gray separation.

Most photographers try to fix a flat black and white image by pushing the contrast harder.

➡️ More blacks.
➡️ More whites.
➡️ More drama.

But that is often what makes the image look harsh, heavy, or lifeless.

The real structure of a black and white photo lives in the gray range.

The face.
The skin.
The sky.
The wall.
The texture.
The quiet transitions between light and shadow.

When you ignore the midtones, you lose dimension.

Before adding more contrast, shape the gray tones first.

➡️ Use curves.
➡️ Use dodge and burn.
➡️ Use local adjustments.

Separate the important areas without flattening the rest.

Great black and white editing is not about extremes.

It is about intention.

Stop ruining your shadows.

In black and white photography, contrast is powerful, but too much contrast in the wrong place destroys the image.

The biggest mistake?
Pushing the global contrast slider until the blacks collapse.

When that happens, you lose the quiet details.
The midtones disappear.
The image starts looking heavy, flat, and muddy.

Pure black should be used with intention.
It should guide the eye, create structure, and add drama.

It should not cover the whole image like a blanket.

The real depth in black and white lives in the subtle gray transitions between light and shadow.

Before you push the contrast slider, ask yourself:

➡️ Am I adding depth, or am I deleting information?

Use curves.
Protect your midtones.
Let the shadows breathe.
