Gentoo Penguin, early morning in Brown Bluff, Antarctic Peninsula.
That place is absolutely crazy, at first geologically speaking! It's the location of an old volcano, which last eruption happened 6 millions years ago just before the end of the subduction of the Pacific plate bellow the Antarctic Peninsula plate. And that volcano erupted in a lake, located bellow a glacier!! This lead to some really specific layering visible in the cliff behind the beach. The beach itself is composed of basaltic pebbles, there are many big boulders of brown tuffa fallen from the cliff, and at low tide one can even see pillow-lavas!

And to add to this there is a colony of Gentoo Penguins, and another big one of adelie Penguins!!

In January I had the opportunity to have a 12-days holiday in Ushuaia in between two Antarctica contracts. I didn't want to stay in town, so I went hiking in the mountains North of the city, for 6 days. I saw no one in 3 days, just taking time to enjoy the landscape, walk slowly, stopping whenever I wanted to camp.

That evening, I stopped next to a small lake in the mountains, and I could enjoy the Milky Way with almost no light pollution (just the moon starting to rise behind the mountains)... And the next morning I could enjoy a swim in the lake!

Yesterday was the !
I wanted to share the worse nightmare of every small fish and krill in the Southern Ocean, the kind of thing that make them wake up sweaty in the middle of the night! The full-open mouth of a King penguin of South Georgia, with the numerous barbs preventing the fish to escape once trapped in its beak!
