Summer’s almost over and with it (hopefully) the massive heatwave that struck France the last few weeks.

Time to have a look back on our trout season which has been significantly disturbed by the weather and water conditions.

Still, we managed to enjoy some times on the water chasing local brownies in different rivers around our place and discovering some new ones, and overall had pretty good results regarding the time we allocated to the salmonids this year.

The first half of this year has been a rather unusual one for trout fishing in our local rivers.

The season started with heavy rainfall and consistently high water levels. Then, almost overnight, late May brought scorching temperatures and exceptionally low flows, cutting short what had seemed to be a very promising season.

On top of that, our different trips earlier this year kept us away from our home waters for several weeks. In the end, opportunities to fish close to home were few and far between.
So we tried to make the most of every outing. And despite such a limited window of opportunity, the season still rewarded us with some great fishing, especially on dry fly, and results that exceeded our expectations considering the time we were able to spend on the water.

Mexican wildlife

During our little trip to Mexico, we had the pleasure to enjoy some of the central america wildlife eith animals we haven’t ever seen before. Coatis, Boa, Manatees, Iguanas and many more! Such a cool parentheses between two fishing sessions.

Mexican wine & lobster tails.
~
While fishing trip are obviously, well… fish related, they’re also the perfect occasion to enjoy some local (and fresh) products and meet new people!
During our stay in Xcalak we had the pleasure to meet a couple of French speaking people who kindly invited us to share a lobster aperitif out on there little piece of paradise
Because fly fishing trips are not only a matter of fish.

Catching fish is cool, doing it on foot on DIY is even cooler!
~
One aspect that truly seduces us in Xcalak is the amount of possibilities you can have of fishing on your own. While a car is almost mandatory to stroll around, the coastline is still pretty accessible and gives you the access to many opportunities on several flats. On the other side, you also have the possibility to fish some parts of the Chetumal Bay, even if the road to get there is a little bit tricky.
Unfortunately for us the bay didn’t delivered much action during our stay but we finally ended up finding a good amount of bonefish on the ocean side in only inches of water.

Another on bites the dust!

After a rather slow start with very few bonefish in the mangroves and a couple of blown shots, we finally managed to find a small school of these silver rockets in a super tiny bay
A well presented crazy charlie in tan color did the trick on this one!

Bonefish are definitely becoming my favorite fish around.
~
In fact, it I had to only fish for a single species for the rest of my life, it’d probably be bonefish.

Whether I am absolutely in love with trout fishing and salmonids species, the bonefish just seems to have been created by a fly angler.
Super fast, super strong, feeding in ultra shallow water allowing us to chase them on sight fishing and with a feeding habit making it super keen to take flies patterns, it definitely has it all!

Our next tropical adventure is normally not set to take place anytime before 2027 but I already can’t wait to be after them again, and normally it’ll be the second species of bone but we keep it lowkey for the moment.
