Domaine or château? I get asked this ALL the time 🤍
Domaines are beautiful to consider. They’re usually wineries, or once were working wineries, so you’re tucked away in the countryside surrounded by vineyards & sunflowers. The whole feel is more relaxed.
The best bit… most have big converted cellars, perfect for dancing after dinner & a great plan B if it rains (yes, it does sometimes rain in the South of France!).
A lot of domaines have turned the winemaker’s house into guest rooms & the old barns into gîtes. Just remember you’ll need accommodation in the villages close by for your other guests, & transfers are a must.
Châteaux are a little more grand… history, sweeping staircases & big gardens, & many have rooms for your guests on site.
My advice? Don’t choose on the name alone. If you can, come over & visit a few in different parts of France. You might be set on the Dordogne & end up falling for the Languedoc! Think about how many guests need to sleep on site, whether you want grand or relaxed, where the light falls at golden hour & how far you are from the main airports.
Some domaines feel grander than châteaux… & vice versa 😉
