When I said the animals in Galicia demand food, I wasn’t exaggerating.

A few horses grazing near the picnic area had clearly developed a taste for tourist snacks, and they were not shy about asking. Very much in-your-face about it.

A bit further on, the view opened up. On one side, a valley full of wind turbines with a whole herd of cows and horses hiding in their shade. On the other, the highest cliffs in continental Europe, dropping around 620 metres straight into the Atlantic.

A strange mix of wild nature, animals and modern technology, all in one place.

If this spot caught your eye, I can show you a bit more of it in the next reel.

The only Gaudí building outside Catalonia 🛑

That’s how roughly every second person who’s been there labels the Episcopal Palace in Astorga. In reality it’s one of three structures the world’s most famous Catalan built away from his homeland.

And the real story is better than the caption.

GaudĂ started the palace for a friend, a bishop who came from his own region. The fact that a commission in LeĂłn went to a Catalan instead of a local architect stirred up the first conflicts, and they kept sn*******ng from there.

When that bishop died a few years later, the obstruction got openly hostile. Gaudí lost his patience, abandoned the project and took his drawings with him. He said he’d rather leave the building unfinished than give in to their demands. So the palace was finished by entirely different hands.

If you’re into Modernisme and Gaudí, Astorga is well worth the trip. If that kind of architecture leaves you cold, you can skip it with a clear conscience.

Fachwerk might just be my favourite architectural style.
There’s something captivating about these leaning, centuries-old wooden frames, with their one-of-a-kind patterns, cracked beams and the faded traces of decoration almost worn away by the winds of time.
Every one of them is a little different. Every one has outlived the people who built it.

Do you love half-timbering as much as I do? Let me know, I’ve definitely got more frames to share with you.

How many times did you fall asleep in history class — listening to dull facts about places you’d never been to?

Travel lets you learn history differently. You find an interesting place, you go there, and you discover it on the spot: what happened here and when, who passed through, what made it matter.

History lessons like that are never boring.

That’s exactly what happened to us in Avignon — a city I knew nothing about, honestly, beyond the phrase “the Avignon Papacy.”

I love these hands-on history lessons.

Do you read up on the places you visit while you travel? Or do you let them tell their own story once you’re there?
