“Welcome to Fort Klamath, folks!”
Suddenly, an old-timer appeared in front of us.
“Hi, my name is Jeff, and I’d love to tell you more about the fort.”
And Jeff certainly had plenty to tell us.
He was a colourful character. Not just because of the old uniform he was wearing, but because once Jeff started talking, there was no stopping him.
He told us about the relationship between the Native Americans and the US military in the old days and shared story after story about the history of Fort Klamath.
Today, Jeff works here as a volunteer, helping to keep the history of the fort alive.
At some point, I asked him:
“Hey Jeff, do many people come here to visit the fort?”
“No, you’re the first ones this week.”
That explained a lot.
It was already Thursday...
No wonder Jeff had so much to tell us. 😂
One thing was certain: he certainly didn’t have to worry about his volunteer job becoming too stressful.
But that’s exactly what made meeting Jeff so much fun. He had the time, the stories and, most importantly, the enthusiasm to tell them.
We could have stopped at Fort Klamath, taken a few photos and ridden on.
Instead, we met Jeff.
And those are exactly the little encounters that make a road trip memorable.
Thanks, Jeff!
