Tuesday night - not much news today. I think I needed a bit of a break today. Back tomorrow.

Monday night - well some good news, I guess! As I had hoped, we have a good core database and the work to repair the site structure tables is progressing. Some may have noticed that familiar pages appeared, briefly. In other words, we are much closer to fixing the forum than ever. As is the nature of this work, something got broken just as I was deciding to call it a night, so it's not very tidy at the moment. Back tomorrow.

It's late on Sunday night, and here is today's update on the new server/E-Group forum repair. There are three 'fronts' really - the email sending functionality (absolutely vital for a forum), problems with PHP handlers, the software services which link the forum software and its database, and, thirdly, the forum's own database, which has some frustrating corruption that we can't seem to fix.

The email sending setup has been 95% done and no more can be done until we get the green light from Amazon Web Services, which should be any time. PHP - I think that is now finally fixed. The DPNow forum reflected the issues I have had configuring and reconfiguring the PHP handlers, and it is now stable. This is perfect news for the E-Group forum, which uses the same PHP resources.

So that leaves the E-Group forum database. It seems that a small part of the database that provides the structure and framework of the forum, is corrupted or missing. I'm very confident that the nearly 20 years worth of threads, posts, PMs, and membership details, are intact. It's just the relatively tiny parts of the database the string everything together.

So I will have one last go, now that PHP is stable, to boot the forum up with one of our recent database backups. If that doesn't work, I will do a forum rebuild, restructuring the forum from the intact data. This would probably result in a vanilla forum, without the customisations and widgets we are all used to, but it will be a working forum, with the archive intact, and I know how to recreate the look and feel of the forum, as it was. It could be an opportunity to improve the design and layout, too.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding.

Ian

Guest post again. Looking after yourself as well as your camera equipment is important in the heat we have had.

I've just washed my summer walking hat and while it's not looking a lot different I wish I'd taken a picture of the colour of the water that came out of it.

Look after yourselves while you are waiting for Ian to complete his heroics. It will surely be worth it

Friday evening - I have had to concentrate on ensure everything is ready for switching off the old server (and ensure I don't get charged for an additional month!). Getting email to work has been a headache because our new server can't send email natively at the moment (industry standard practice for many server hosting companies, unfortunately). So we have been using the old server's mail system, but that will end on Sunday when the server is retired. The block on the new server won't be lifted for a week or so, but the plan, anyway, is to use a commercial mail relay service to improve mail deliverability. This is mostly what I have been working on today - wow is it complicated!

Wednesday night; a hunch that the database was corrupted beyond redemption seems to have been proven. We can now load the site from a database backup from last month, but there are routing problems and CSS styling to fix. I can't do much work tomorrow, until the evening, sorry.

Tuesday night - I have made so many changes today, but no breakthrough. It's getting a bit dispiriting.

Monday night - I just want to reassure everyone that I am still working on getting the forum running again. In fact quite a few misconfigurations have been found and fixed. A mistake did break some things but those have now been fixed. It doesn't look like it, but some progress has actually been made.

Sunday night - definite progress, but frustratingly stuck again. You can now see the forum, but not touch it! Something very obscure is messing with the routing mechanism, so logins don't work. So close!

Saturday night - all day, apart for some chores and a little gardening (the garden has really suffered!) I have tried to get the forum (or more accurately, the web server software layer, talking to the database. The more technically minded will understand the role of PHP in this. Because our end of life version of the forum software has to use a specific version of PHP, I assumed I could use a more secure alternative, designed just for this purpose. It turns out that this was not possible. So another dead end, but going down a more conventional route should be OK for now.
