So today I met my local guide Ilana who was originally from Poland but afer some years in Sweden has lived in Barcelona for many years. She knew I had seen many places yesterday so we focused on the Gothic Quarter, the Cathedral, the architecture of Gaudi and Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The obvious highlight was the Sagrada Familia a modern, or should be, Wonder of the World.
I ate at 4 Cats tonight a true Catalan restaurant.
Another beautiful day and so much to enjoy in this City -too many photos to share so three posts -Gaudi -other highlights and food

So for first day - I literally got my “steps” with a walk up many flights of stairs to Parc Güell with its Gaudi exhibits (15k steps so far today) not realizing a few blocks over there were a set of escalators already built🤣🤣🤣
Amazing City of architecture to see, but I started my day at the La Boqueria Market - always best to go early - I grabbed a few things for a planned picnic lunch tomorrow.
Lunch was Tapas -a Spanish stable “patatas bravas” incredible pieces of perfect potato with in this case a chipotle based sauce -each restaurant will have its own “secret sauce”
Here are a few highlights - more later

Well good news I did get to Barcelona tonight 😊
Bad news lost an afternoon and evening and an 18 hour travel day 🙁
Good news like what I see will be up early tomorrow. 🤣🤣
So found a boutique hotel for Barcelona - other two AirBnB -perfect location direct L3 subway Metro to Catalunya stop from the main station and hotel is on Las Ramblas and literally across the street from The Metro.
Nice little balcony and trains were great other than the unfortunate incident that threw every schedule off.
You got to love the signs in this hotel - creative

Oh well - ominous start on first of three legs of the train journey from Brive to Toulouse/Narbonne/Barcelona.
Apparently a pedestrian accident on the line has stopped traffic in both directions. I was due to arrive Toulouse at 8:43 (still an hour away) and it’s already 10:43 and delay keeps moving.
Missed my second train at 9:17 but hopefully will be able to get the last connection to Narbonne to enable me to still get to Barcelona but late tonight now.
First issue ever and I’m guessing sadly a fatality in that accident 🙁

Spain for 10 days

So some seasoned travellers spotted landmarks like Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.
Plan to leave Monday via Toulouse and Narbonne for Barcelona with one day dedicated touring with a local to make sure I can avoid lines at top spots and set up the next two days. Then off on a high speed train for 3 days in an AirBnB in Sol in Madrid and regional train excursions to its traditional towns like Segovia and Aranjuez. Finally - for Tapas or Pintxos in San Sebastián.
Despite its huge Michelin starred reputation it’s the bar and tapas that draws me - you can see some photos from the post I did yesterday.
There is no direct train from San Sebastián to France so I end up doubling back to Barcelona and then back to BsD
My photo today - the least and lightest I should need for a ten day trip - my trusty Nomantic soft bag with so many useful pockets that can be carried or utilized like a backpack (best for me now I’m 40+ 🤣) and then my PacSafe that I hand carry when backpacking the Nomantic - comes with all kinds of safety features to prevent theft even RFID and anti-cut webbing.
I have travelled with these for multi-destination month long hauls at a time, and numerous trips to and from USA and to Paris and Burgundy and amazed that each bag still looks like new - I did a lot of research and highly recommend both.
I use e-sacks to compress my packing and strange to some perhaps but I pack a plastic plate, and utensils, a water bottle and small thermos - as I like to buy local food and then picnic as I do my walkabouts.
Best trips are usually the one’s you prepare a few days out - hope that trend continues

WINTER NOT OVER, SPRING NOT HERE YET

Time to create a new adventure - trains are inexpensive, and I had some almost forgotten credits on AirBnB so no better time than to start an adventure on Monday with a 6:15am train
I started a travel log in 2021 that documented my adventure to Germany, The Czech Republic, Austria, Italy and Greece - you can find it at

Here are a few photos to give you a clue

So a fun day in the Bay Area and in particular in Berkeley.
Since I was last here the “Speed King” has mastered his big-boy bike which has the coolest green lights at night time. We visited Tilden Park and rode the narrow gauge steam train and visited the pet farm and had the most amazing “stacked savory fries” and sangria at the Brazil Cafe and Westbrae Biergarten in Berkeley before coming back to more sunset bicycling.
As you can tell Madi had a full day❤️😊

Always enjoy walking between Concourses B&C in terminal one at Chicago O’Hare with all its color and neon sculptures and of course passing the dinasaur that I know Colton would love
After arriving in San Francisco - I went with Nicole my daughter to pick up Colton from Transitional Kindergarten (to receive a massive hug ❤️👍) then onto preschool to meet Ms Madi - who later in the evening was full of smiles and a big hug for “Taid” after a more guarded first encounter 😊
Went for everyone’s favorite meal at a new (for me) Mexican in Danville last night - highlight the spicy watermelon margarita!

Well, on the road again, this time back to the United States to spend some glorious time with family and friends and for Bespoke get togethers too.
Each time I now visit Paris I try to stay in a different part of the City (which is broken down by Arrondissements or areas) previously 1,2,4,5,6,7 and 18 (Montmartre my first time when I was 19) so this time 3 at Hotel Roubaix. This epitomized a small(but very functional room) and best of all very clean and inexpensive in a superb area for restaurants, art and access through walking or the Metro to everywhere. The reality is you should be out and about not in your room 😊
I ended up accumulating about 12k steps and of course captured some new street art, including a Volte and an amazing new museum for me - Musee des Arts et Metiers just a few blocks from the Hotel
