Fun encounter earlier in January: the black-throated diver (Plongeon arctique) in winter plumage!

This is the time to watch divers wintering in southern Europe before heading north again to breed!

During one of my first outing of the year I had the luck to find myself a high tide on the Baie de l'Aiguillon in Western France. This a place where millions of shorebird overwinter and one of the biggest stayover of Western Europe!

While searching for the Horned lark on an island in Western France, I had the chance to see many wintering geese and shorebirds on the way! Char enter maritime and Vendée are the main wintering ground for this species in France!

White stork - Cigogne blanche

Great flyover on the flooded fields in spring. These birds enjoy wetlands to rest during migration but this is also their preferred feeding grounds, in search for crustaceans or rodents.

Feral rock pigeon - Pigeon biset féral

Last year, we had several roommates on the balcony from the pigeon colony on our roof! Until being able to fly properly, the young searched for a safe place in the middle of the city! Quite fun to watch these from the windows with their unfinished looks 🤣
