How do you know who is the right match for you?
Ask yourself these questions:
What is important to us on our wedding day?
What purpose do we want our wedding photos to fulfill?
The right photographer is the one who takes photographs that are not only beautiful but also convey the things that are important to you even years from now.
The first thing that helps you to start cutting down on options is the style of the photographer. Do you prefer softness or sharp edges, dark and moody or light and airy, bright colours or muted ones? Does a more artistic approach appeal to you or a more realistic one? In your portraits do you prefer a wide angle with a beautiful landscape on the background? Do you want the photos to showcase your style and attire on your wedding day? Or do you want the photos to be intimate and emotional - is the love between the two of you and capturing the emotions the most important? How about the documentary side, can you really sense the atmosphere of the wedding almost as if you had been present when going through the photographer’s galleries? Or is it most important to you that there is a picture of every guest no matter what?
It doesn’t even have to be either or - the style of a photographer can be a mix of many things but you hardly get all of that in one photographer. Important disclaimer: don’t expect to get something you have not seen on the photographer’s portfolio. Most photographers are willing to fulfill your wishes and go beyond your expectations, but a photographer's style is fundamentally individual and you can't make one photographer into another.
When you find a photographer whose work you are drawn into, get more familiar with their work, wedding galleries, the mission and the way of working. Follow their feed and stories in social media, get familiar with their website, and when you find what you have been looking for, get in touch and ask for a get-to-know phone call to ultimately see if you click. The photographer has to feel right as a person. During the call you also have a possibility to ask them questions about the things that are important to you.
