Enjoying the eagles this week in Utajärvi!

A winter storm has been sweeping over Northern Ostrobothnia today. It was rather quiet day with the eagles, but we had two birds feeding on the baits. The landing and takeoff direction of the birds depends on the wind as they like to fly against the wind. Today the birds left away from the hides, so we couldn't quite get the flight shots we were looking for.

Weather conditions affect the eagle activity. They come to feed more eagerly when it is colder and they need more energy. On those days there are also more clashes between individuals as they compete about the same food. Today it was +3 celcius, which is really warm for this time of the year.

Perhaps tomorrow will be a busy day again as there has been now two "slow" days. The weatherman says it's going to be sunny and some minus degrees tomorrow, which naturally suits us well. This picture attached was taken on the 17th.

Today we got great shots of Golden Eagles in Utajärvi, Finland!
Kotkakuvauksen kannalta oli tänään iltapäivällä hyvät valot päällä Utajärvellä!

We have been photographing Golden Eagles on our "Golden Eagles in action" photo tour in Utajärvi in Finland. Today we had outstanding light conditions and 4-5 Golden Eagles at the site.

During the last two days we've had all kinds of weather: temperature was around zero on wednesday and thursday and it was even raining, which luckily turned into a light snowfall on thursday. The humidity was very high, so a carpet of mist was hovering above the snowy "eagle forest" yesterday. Today afternoon the skies finally cleared up and eagles started their performance. We got portraits, flight shots and some fighting when a young Golden Eagle chased away an adult from the bait. Our group of six british and french guests got what they were after!
Tomorrow we will try if the Goshawk appears to our feeding site in Liminka.

One little big Brown Bear cub. In July I was in Martinselkonen with a british group watching Brown Bears. I got a chance to test their fairly new 1-person hide, where it is possible to get Bears closer than ever I think! Most of the time the Bears were too close for tele lenses ;) This picture of a cub was taken with a 500mm lens, since one of the ideas I had was to get extreme close-ups. If you go there on your own, this is a good hide to get a bit different kind of pictures (more pictures to follow).

Heinäkuussa olimme Martinselkosessa karhuja katselemassa brittiryhmän kanssa. Sain tilaisuuden testata melko uutta yhden hengen kuvauskojua metsässä. Niin kuin arvata saattaa, nallet tulevat todella lähelle ja kuvausvinkkelit tästä kojusta ovat erilaiset (myöhemmin lisää esimerkkikuvia). Kuva otettu 500mm:n telellä kojua lähestyvästä karhunpennusta.

In August this year we photographed Ospreys in Pohtiolampi in Finland. I had a privilege to meet Jan van der Greef Photography . He takes wonderful pictures with long shutter speed (you can see it yourself by visiting his page)!

We took photos of Ospreys, Grey Heron and Lesser Black-backed Gulls with more of an artistic approach. When panning and using longer shutter speeds it is important to pay attention to the background. On this picture I think the background has quite nice colors and they bring rhythm to the picture. If you look more carefully, you'll also see the rain falling down and bringing more texture. The bird itself could have been a bit more sharp (especially the head). This was shot with 500mm lens and 1/40 seconds.

Elokuussa kuvasimme kalasääskiä Pohtiolammella Kangasalalla yhdessä asiakkaamme Jan van der Greefin kanssa. Jan on tunnettu hollantilainen kuvaaja, joka kuvaa taiteellisia kuvia pitkillä suljinajoilla ja pannaamalla. Pitkillä suljinajoilla kuvattaessa taustasta voi tulla monesti sekavan oloinen, joten pehmeän ja kauniin taustan pannatessa saa esim. ruohikosta tai muusta kasvillisuudesta, kuten tässä kuvassa.Kuva harmaahaikarasta 1/40 sekunnin suljinajalla ja 500mm linssillä.
