Autumn is a short but fascinating season for mammal photography in Finland.

Bears are at their heaviest before hibernation. Wolves are growing their thick winter coats, and young wolverines are already almost adult size.

At the same time, the landscape changes almost every week. The days get shorter, autumn colours deepen and, by October, I am already quietly hoping for the first snow.

There is less time to photograph than during the long summer days, but what autumn lacks in daylight, it often gives back in atmosphere.

I’ve been digging a little deeper into my hard drives lately while preparing my presentation for Hanko Foto Festival next Saturday.

It’s funny how many photographs are hiding there that I had almost forgotten about. Some of them feel surprisingly fresh when I see them again after several years.

Looking forward to sharing some of these images — and the stories behind them — in Hanko next weekend.

Autumn in Finland is short, unpredictable and perhaps a little overlooked.

We see countless photographs from the bright Finnish summer and the snowy winter, but much fewer from the weeks in between.

For a wildlife photographer, those weeks can be especially interesting: autumn colours, mist, migrating birds, changing wildlife and the return of dark nights.

When I bought my house, the garden was maintained almost like a golf course. There was hardly a w**d anywhere. Today, it looks very different.

Over the years, I have allowed parts of the lawn to grow wild. Nettles, thistles, firew**d and other local plants have returned. I have left dead wood, branches and other small untidy corners in place. And the butterflies followed.

On the best summer days, there can be dozens of large butterflies in the garden at the same time — Silver-washed Fritillaries, Peacock butterflies, Red Admirals and Camberwell Beauties among them.

Of course, my reasons are not entirely selfless. I love photographing butterflies, and having them in my own garden means I know the light, the backgrounds and the places where they are likely to appear.

But what I enjoy most is seeing how one small change affects everything else. Wild plants bring insects. Insects bring birds. Later, seeds from the same plants provide food for Blue T**s, Bullfinches and Siskins.

My garden certainly does not look like a golf course anymore.
I prefer it this way.

Wildlife photography has given me far more than photographs.

Over the years, I've realised that the images themselves are only part of the story. What matters even more is the connection they can create—with nature, with wildlife, and perhaps with the desire to protect both.

In my latest blog, I reflect on what we can give back to nature and why I believe wildlife photography comes with responsibility as well as privilege.

This week on the blog:

Last week we spent a night testing a new wolverine photography hide in eastern Finland with Peltomäki Wildlife Photography . Before recommending any new location, I always want to experience it myself and see what photographers can realistically expect.

The evening brought three bears, a female wolverine, an unexpected Black Kite and even a few entertaining field voles. Not everything went exactly as planned, and some of the most beautiful scenes also turned out to be the most challenging to photograph.

In the new post, I share my impressions of the hides, the landscape and the wildlife.
