Last year, I had the wonderful opportunity to work as a stills photographer for the Whatever Group / YLE TV series Kriittinen piste, a drama/comedy of a 19 year old Hodan who returns to the small town of Ylitornio in Northern Finland with dreams of making it to the Olympics in ski jump. This was a lot of fun on set and I’m really excited to see the end result, as the show premieres today on Yle and Yle Areena. Yay! Starring Fadumo Hersi, Timo Torikka, Jarkko Tiainen, Jarkko Pajunen, Kamaludin Ahmed Abdulla, Amos Brotherus and Rukia Mahamed. Directed by Kaisa El Ramly.

Portrait workshop June 11-15 at Raudaskylän opisto! I will be teaching a week-long workshop on portraiture this summer. More info below and link in bio in Finnish. Registration is now open!

Kiinnostaako muotokuvaus?

Here’s the photograph from the Pink Room in NIGHTTOWN. A lot of stuff went down in this room, funny things, heavy things, erotic things and very moving things. With some of the photographs in NIGHTTOWN I wanted to build a theme of watching and seeing. Joyce’s novel is rife with sexual guilt and I wanted to explore this theme of being seen. Only, when an animal watches you, they see you but they don’t judge you.

Many thanks to and Raija!

Another photograph I created for NIGHTTOWN, The Dobermann. Animals were an important theme in the work, which also refers to the Circe episode in Joyce’s Ulysses. Transformations, humans turning into animals, animals that can speak are all a part of the hallucinatory experience of Circe and something that was present also in NIGHTTOWN. Light designer Jukka Huitila created an amazing video for the foyer where the audience was waiting for their turn to enter the show, filled with dreamlike (and nightmarish) visions such as a dog-headed woman. Jukka created another video of a dog barking which the audience passed later when walking around NIGHTTOWN and we thought it worked really well in dialogue with my photograph.

In the second photograph you can see circus artist Elisabeth Künkele and dancer Nina Bulgakova performing, and in the third you can see director Pirjo Yli-Maunula commenting on dancer Henna-Maria Hanhineva’s scene in rehearsal.

Now that NIGHTTOWN has closed, I wanted to share the photographs I created for the piece. I’d like to start with what I’ve called Eye Fly, which was in the Sh***ri Room in NIGHTTOWN. I think this was the team favorite, and I was really pleased how it turned out as a 1.95 x 1.30 meter print for the show. James Joyce’s Ulysses and more specifically its Chapter 15, Circe, was the artistic frane of reference for NIGHTTOWN and director Pirjo Yli-Maunula and the team built many references to it even if NIGHTTOWN wasn’t a version or an interpretation of Circe.

Decay, hallucinations, transformation, death, carnality and the like are among the many themes in the text and I wanted to make photographs that somehow convey those ideas or are seen as belonging to such a world. Surreal, absurd, dream logic, ugly, beautiful were strong keywords for me when I was making the photographs.

The other picture features the amazing circus artists Ben Collis and Elisabeth Künkele with the print. Thank you to for letting me photograph her lovely horse for the project this summer!

Director Pirjo Yli-Maunula in NIGHTTOWN, watching the incredible artists of the team at work. She is there to guide the audience and cast a watchful eye over the events unfolding in the nocturnal city. If you happen to hear a loud joyful noise right before the first audience gets to go through the gate, it is the team getting ready to begin, see third photo. There is always a short speech by someone and it’s always a little different except for one word: Enjoy. After tonight the city closes for good, but those who get to walk around in it today, enjoy!

The amazing Milla Virtanen, a veteran of many Flow Productions pieces has created astonishing scenes for NIGHTTOWN. She is such a force of nature and willing to really go to extremes in her performance, and this time is no different. NIGHTTOWN’s themes are carnality, fantasy, hallucination, transformation among many others and she sure builds on those themes. Her strength as a performer is palpable and plain to see for all who enter NIGHTTOWN. Tonight and tomorrow only!

WELCOME TO NIGHTTOWN! Tonight (well, at 4PM) is the premiere of Flow Productions’ latest immersive performance, NIGHTTOWN. We have had test audiences, we had a pre-premiere, and today the thing kicks off full throttle. The show is a 6-hour performance with 30-minute blocks reserved for each audience of 40 people. All the tickets have been booked in advance, so around 1500 people will have their chance to take a walk in the nocturnal city that is NIGHTTOWN.

The piece is inspired by James Joyce’s Ulysses and its chapter 15, Circe. NIGHTTOWN is not an interpretation or a version of Circe, but the chapter’s carnality, hallucinations, ugliness, beauty and considerable humor have inspired the performance.

And since this is part of the Lumo Light Festival’s programming, light has been a special consideration in this piece as well as previous Flow immersions. Enjoy the performances, take in the light design and let the sound carry you into another world of nightly fantasies. Welcome!

Nikke Launonen, a staple of Flow Productions’ immersive performances is there to accompany your travels through NIGHTTOWN. He is ever there, casting a watchful eye over the unfolding events and creating scenes in his own right. If he asks you too follow him, you should do so, because he knows everything. NIGHTTOWN premieres Nov 17, show runs thru Nov 19.

In NIGHTTOWN, you will come across circus artist Emma Langmoen (NOR) at some point—in fact, she might give you more attention than you’d expect, if you happen to catch her eye. Emma is such fun to work with and an incredible performer. Oulu audiences have seen her in Flow Prodcutions’ The Secret Garden and in Hylky and now she returns to us in NIGHTTOWN. Show premieres tomorrow, Nov 17 and runs thru Nov 19. See you inside!

Flow Family's new members Ben Collis (SCT) and Elisabeth Künkele (GER) are incredible circus artists who bring their considerable talent to NIGHTTOWN. Masters of intense concentration, they are also energetic performers and can carry a tune between them with ease. During the show's cycle there are opportunities to see them in things like hair-hanging! Hair-to-mouth! Sh***ri! Wrestling! Spinning someone around by their hair! Strenuous exertion! Bathtub shenanigans! What you get to see depends on when you enter NIGHTTOWN. Show premieres Nov 17, show runs thru Nov 19.
