Drama owl 🦉

Despite being formidable predators, short-eared owls often hunt during the day over open fields and pastures, placing them right in the crosshairs of aggressive, territorial mobbers:

• The Fieldfare Opening: Fieldfares are notoriously fearless thrushes when defending their nesting or feeding grounds. They are known to aggressively dive-bomb, screech, and even weaponize projectile f***s to drive off raptors that get too close.

• The Lapwing Finish: If the owl tries to escape into another patch of territory, enter the Northern Lapwing—the undisputed acrobatic fighter pilot of the meadows.

Locked eyes with a ghost in the blizzard. ❄️🦉

The snow was coming down so thick I could barely see past my lens, and then—total stillness. Out of the gray, this Great Grey Owl drifted down to eye level, completely unbothered by the storm, looking straight through me. No sound, no fear, just two cold souls freezing time together for a fraction of a second. Easily one of the most surreal moments I’ve ever had behind the camera.

Mother Sparrowhawk is on high alert, scanning the forest floor for a meal. But she faces a tough choice: go for the bigger catch to feed all three mouths, or play it safe with an easy, smaller target?
