JYU Music and Motion Lab This page provides information and updates about the Music and Motion Lab of the Department of Music, Arts and Culture at the University of Jyväskylä.

The Department of Music, Arts and Culture at the University of Jyväskylä is home to a state-of-the-art Qualysis motion capture system. Follow this page for the most up-to-date information from our lab including opportunities to take part in exciting and fun research, upcoming events and workshops, and the latest research publications from studies done here in our lab. What does it mean to particip

ate in a mocap experiment? If you come to our lab, this is what you can expect:

* The researchers will greet you upon arrival and find a motion capture suit that will fit you comfortably. These suits are cleaned after every use. The suits make it easy to attach small, reflective markers to your body. You've probably seen similar suits being used to make big Hollywood movies!

* The markers are the only things that our motion capture cameras can "see," so that only your movements are recorded.

* The researchers will give you instructions and make sure you are comfortable and ready before beginning the experiment. "Beginning the experiment" usually means turning on some music.

* During the experiment, researchers will be behind a privacy screen for your comfort. They will be available to answer any questions or help you with any problems at any time during the experiment.

* After the experiment is over, the researchers can tell you more about what we are trying to study. The reason we do not tell all of this in the beginning is not to trick you, but because we want you to do whatever comes naturally to you rather than worrying about doing the "right" thing for our research.

* If you like, you can give feedback to the researchers about what you liked and didn't like about the experiment.

There are still spots available Monday and Tuesday of next week to participate in our perceptual study, where all you have to do is watch some animations of people dancing and give your opinion about them, fill in a few personality questionnaires, and get 1 FREE MOVIE TICKET from us in thanks! This study is open to anyone who **did not** participate in our mocap study about dancing with different partners conducted in 2016. If you're not sure if you're eligible, you can contact me ([email protected]) and ask. Just up for a time at this link https://doodle.com/poll/xwu8a6vfy253r7ix and check in at M206 at your chosen time. Hope to see some of you soon!

Sign up for a time that suits you best. Please check in at M206 when you arrive for the experiment. The experiment should take no more than one hour, and you will receive your movie ticket voucher after completing it. If you need to change your time, please contact Emily at [email protected]

Want to support our motion capture research but don't want to actually be motioned captured? Now is your chance! This month, we are conducting a perceptual study where all you have to do is watch some animations of people dancing and give your opinion about them, fill in a few personality questionnaires, and get 1 FREE MOVIE TICKET from us in thanks! This study is open to anyone who **did not** participate in our mocap study about dancing with different partners conducted in 2016. If you're not sure if you're eligible, you can contact me ([email protected]) and ask. If you've been watching from the sidelines waiting for a non-dance experience, now is your chance! Just up for a time at this link https://doodle.com/poll/xwu8a6vfy253r7ix. Hope to see some of you soon!

Hello, Mocap Friends!

We are looking for participants for a new experiment! This study is about moving to different styles of music while listening with headphones--*with a friend!* You must bring a friend in order to participate, preferably someone of your same gender who is not your romantic partner. The experiment should not take longer than an hour and a half. You and your friend will each earn a movie ticket for your participation.

As always, your participation and data will be kept private and confidential, and you can choose to stop participating at any time. Our aim is for you to have a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

We have been busy preparing the lab and are ready to bring participants in starting this week! You can sign up for a time by following this Doodle link:

The time you sign up for is for you AND your partner, so be sure to okay the time with your partner before signing up. This is not an experiment you can do alone! We'll send you more information once you've chosen your time.

You are welcome to contact us at any time if you have any questions or concerns before the experiment. Thank you for your support with our research. We look forward to meeting you in person.

All the best,

Emily Carlson
PhD Candidate in Music
Department of Music, Arts and Culture

Researchers from North Carolina State University have developed an energy-efficient technique for accurately tracking a user's physical activity based on data from wearable devices.
