Thanks to everyone who came to our 25th Anniversary exhibition Multitudes of Blue last month! The exhibitoin has now closed, but once again we would like to extend our thanks to Hippolyte for providing us with an exhibition space, to Dahlia El Broul and Ksenia Kaverina for curating the exhibition and to Kulturfonden and Nygréns stiftelse for the funding. And of course to all the the exhibiting memebrs of Värinä, as well as the ones who did not take part in the show, who together make the upkeep of Värinä possible.

Kiitos kaikille näyttelyvieraille ja näyttelyn tekoon tavalla tai toisella osallistuneille. Oli ilo esitellä Värinän toimintaa ja jäsenten taiteellista työskentelyä!

TUULA NÄRHINEN

Tuula Närhinen (b. 1967) is a Helsinki-based multidisciplinary visual artist and scholar. Närhinen’s practice is committed to exploring the process of imaging. Her projects focus on the epistemic qualities inherent to analogue (photo)graphic techniques. She constructs experimental visual interfaces that connect the observer with the fabric of the world. The images that emerge from this interaction expose the pictorial potential latent in natural phenomena. The artist's corporeal enactment and exposition of the material process are characteristic of her works. Re-adapting methods and instruments derived from the natural sciences, Närhinen facilitates the transcription of naturally occurring movements, such as water or wind, into visual plots.
Närhinen received a Doctorate in Fine Arts (2016) from the University of the Arts Helsinki, where she currently works as an Academy Research Fellow.

SIIRI SIRVIÖ

Siiri Sirviö (b. 1993) is a photographer and visual artist based in Helsinki. She is currently completing her bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, graduating in 2025. Her practice is rooted in analogue photography and guided by an intuitive approach. Working in the darkroom, Sirviö has found the solitude and unrushed nature of hand-printing essential to her process. This serves as a countermove to the modern urban norm, where everything is expected to happen quickly and efficiently. Her works explore the themes of illness and its impact on identity and agency. Since 2025 Siiri Sirviö has been the head of the board of Värinä.

HOME ALONE COLLECTIVE

The Home alone collective consists of photographic artists Adele Hyry (b. 1994) and Emma Sarpaniemi (b. 1993). The artistic duo emphasises the importance of friendship, communication, sincerity, and having fun. Portraits and photographs they take of themselves at regular intervals play an important role, and the brainstorming that takes place during the photography sessions becomes part of the finished work. Both members of the collective also work as individual artists.

OONA HERRANEN

Oona Herranen (b. 1992) is a visual arts education major and a member of Värinä since 2024. Working primarily with analogue photography, she shoots on film and hand-prints her images in the darkroom, emphasising the tactile and process-driven nature of the medium. Her work explores themes of absurdity and non-existence, often through performative self-portraiture. Using the slow, deliberate pace of film, she reflects on her relationship with both her inner self and the surrounding world.

TUUKKA KAILA

Tuukka Kaila (b. 1975) is a Helsinki-based artist and publisher. His work revolves around questions of knowledge, representation, duration, and materiality. Throughout his career, Kaila has been involved in many artist-run initiatives with the aim of ensuring access to means of production and retaining a voice in how artistic work is structured and supported. He is the co-founder of the publishing house Rooftop Press and the micro-press Vallilan Risopaja. From 2025, Kaila will work as a professor of photography at the Estonian Academy of Arts.

Tuukka's work can also be seen in the group exhibition Coalescence: Happenstance With All Due Intent at gallery Shimmer in Rotterdam. The exhibition is curated by Paul O'Neill and Shimmer. The exhibition is open until 23.10.2025.

ADELE HYRY

Adele Hyry (b. 1994) is a visual artist living in Helsinki. Their lens-based works play with the intimate aspects of one’s lifetime, striving to reach elsewhere from their realistic starting points. Hyry likes to experiment with analogue methods such as printing in the colour darkroom. In their practice, Hyry wishes to sidestep predefined frames and seek representations beyond prevailing gender norms. Themes of love, community, and emotional experience recur in Hyry’s layered works, which grow from day-to-day observations into lively installations and publications. Hyry is currently pursuing their MA studies in the Fine Art Photography department of Aalto University. They have also studied fine art photography at the Valand Academy in Gothenburg (SWE). In 2022, Hyry’s debut artist’s book Chicken-Legged Hunter Ladybug was published. Their works have been shown in Gerðarsafn Art Museum (ICE), Photographic Gallery Hippolyte, SIC Space, and Wäinö Aaltonen Museum (FIN), as well as CHART Book Fair (DK), and Tokyo Art Book Fair (JPN).
Hyry is the other half of the art collective Home Alone Collective. The collective also has images in this exhibition.
