Hiding.

In the middle of autumn colors in Koli I parked my van and walked to feel the autumn air to the shore of Pielinen. The calmness in this season is so beautiful. I wish this season lasted longer but maybe the short time we have with this beautiful play of nature is the very thing that makes it so special. 🤎

Autumn meditation. 🍂

I had trouble finding composition yesterday when shooting the sunset at Koli and since I'm traveling solo this time I don't have anyone modelling for me which usually helps in these situations. Luckily this stranger came to enjoy the sunset as well and positioned herself to the perfect spot for my photo.

Blending in.

Parrot of coniferous forest.

The red crossbill has a quite unique look. Its parrot-like beak is crossed from the tip and it uses it to break pine cones and get access to nutritious seeds that are its primary food source. This bird is a true specialist.

Koli in Autumn colors.

It's the last day of August and it marks the end of summer. This week's weather has really felt like autumn already when it has been raining non stop for many days in a row. I always have contradicting feelings at this time of the year. It kind of feels sad that the summer is over but at the same time I feel excited about the upcoming autumn. I think it will turn to full excitement soon when the leaves are beginning to turn yellow.

Foggy august mornings. How I wish they never ended.

The last flight.

This is not a typical shot for me to share but I really like how it turned out. I was observing this bird sitting on top of a broken tree branch in the middle of grass field hunting insects. He stood still for a minute and every time something flew by he rocketed towards it and came right back. It took many many tries to finally get this one sharp photo of him just about to catch a small fly but finally I got what I wanted. It's surprisingly hard to predict which direction the bird will fly since it happens so fast. It also takes all the power from your camera's autofocus function to be able to track such a fast and tiny object.

Kung Fu Bear. 🐻

I remember this moment when I was photographing Blondie from my hide in Kuhmo. She was walking on the opposite side of the pond when suddenly she heard something behind her and did this pose. She turned around very fast and jumped on 2 feet to see if someone is there. I'm glad I got it on camera. 😄

At dawn the spirits of the forest begin to play.

The first rays of the sun are magical in the wild. The sounds of nature are getting louder and moist air glimmers all around you creating a magical atmosphere. Spider webs still dripping off water become visible when light hits them. Birds are singing the song of the dawn. Here I am at peace.

Here's a small bird collection I took this and last year. Photographing birds is a great way to pass time when you are waiting for other animals or a golden hour to arrive. Sometimes you might even get a nice picture as a reward. 😊
