Improving the learning experience in Liberia. Education for Our Times “The critical need everywhere in the world is for education to prepare students to lead successful, fulfilling lives. In today’s world, this means providing them with relevant educational experiences that nurture their passions, problem-solving abilities, and higher level thinking skills, including critical thinking and creativity. The best solutions involve teachers, students, schools, and whole communities.”

“The Kumba Academy will provide an environment where the students of Liberia, develops academic skills, intellectual habits, and character traits necessary to maximize their potential throughout their life.”

Help Us Help Them. “Giving children a chance to learn is one of the most urgent priorities in Liberia. Liberia has an adult literacy rate that is less than 50% because generations of children have gone without adequate education. This illiteracy affects all areas of life, ultimately trapping children and families in a never-ending cycle of poverty.”

Giving and empowering young children in Liberia, West Africa experiencing life challenges to achieve their fullest potential.

The humbling effect of children! Throughout my life I have met a lot of great people who have shaped the visions I have as a traveler/photographer/storyteller etc. but none more so than the children I’ve met, specifically the ones in the neighborhood I resided in of Kuta Ber, Ethiopia. As a kid, it seemed that most adults felt this need to silence what they couldn’t answer. An unfair dilemma as a child. But I understand the shame, kids make you question the impossibility by constantly asking why, what, who, when and where. Giving them reasons why to everything is difficult, and I know it’s easier said than done, but a mind where curiosity can be filled with reason will go further than one denied. I spent a lot of time walking and chatting with these kids. They’re kids, so they’ll ask questions unashamed. I learned two things. 1. Learning to explain things to 3 year olds is a skill! And 2. You’re better off asking them what they think about an idea than to answer incorrectly...because when they find the answer, they will challenge your authority. Especially if your fancy camera doesn’t turn them into literal gold 🤷🏿‍♂️ oops!

They say, when you see a photo of someone taking a bite from a sugar cane, you can almost feel the sweetness around your lips simply from seeing. If you know, you know.
