The Dassanech were some of the first people to hunt gigantic Nile Crocodiles in Lake Turkana. They stopped when crocodiles became a protected species but even now, years after they finished this practice, evidence of it is everywhere. When considering the size of a crocodile in terms of length you need to imagine the animal as being around 8 times as long as its head. So this skull would have come from a gigantic animal. Over the years I’ve met so many beautiful African women. Women who’ve inspired me. Women with the most beguiling and educational stories. Women who sometimes don’t need to say anything. All of their life stories are etched into the lines on their faces. In the remote Chalbi desert of Kenya we met an extraordinary Gabbra matriarch. She came to meet us during a visit to fringe-built Gabbra homestead and I was instantly struck by her beauty and grace. I helped her to locate her grandkids that had also run over to say hello. She was mesmerising and I wished I had more time to listen to her stories

The incredibly beautiful celebration of Guol in the Dassanach people of Kenya. It is sometimes called the White Feather ceremony and it’s where a young Dassanach man will choose his future wife by placing a white ostrich feather in her hair. It has rarely been seen by outsiders and it forms a part of the overall nuptial ceremonies that include Dimi, Guol, Micha and finally a wedding. What a tremendous honour it was to be invited to such a vibrant celebration during my recent tour to northern Kenya. We will be returning to remote Kenya in 2028. To join us please message me

The Rendille people of remote Kenya descended through the Cush*tic family lines with the Somali people. When the Somali people were traveling from the Suez Canal through Ethiopia the Somali people chose to go toward Somalia for good pastures. The Rendille people refused to go with them and separated to their present homeland around Marsabit. They had rejected the land of the Somali’s and were thereafter called Rertit, or “rejected people”. During my recent expedition in Kenya my guests and I met two beautiful clans of Rendille people and a highlight was meeting “E” who wore her traditional beads with breathtaking elegance. Yesterday we had the absolute privilege of attending a pre-wedding ceremony with Turkana people here in remote Kenya. I ran into so many old friends and we made so many new ones. What an incredible and surprising event to witness!
