Last week the planets aligned, literally! After a long night of taking pictures I was treated to this alignment of jupiter, venus, mars, saturn and the moon just as the sun began to rise. What a stunning sight, I would thoroughly recommend getting up early before sunrise tomorrow and looking at the eastern horizon to see venus, jupiter, mars, and saturn (pluto and mercury too but they'll be too dark to see with the naked eye). Use an app such as Star Walk to help you find them if you don't spot them straight away 👍

Black lives matter

For the benefit of those who don't understand why "black lives matter" is said instead of "all lives matter" (I didn't previously understand this).
As a white man I have rarely feared for my safety, and when I have it's not been because of my skin colour. I can't begin to understand how it is to live a black life, but from what I've learnt, black people can encounter racism in every part of their lives. Black lives matter because black people are far more likely to be met with violence or abuse, fewer opportunities, and more discrimination than I can imagine. A really helpful metaphor I've heard is "if a house is on fire you wouldn't send a firefighter to all the houses on that street because 'all houses matter' you'd send it to the one that was on fire". All lives matter, but not all lives are at risk from the hate, predudice, discrimination, and violence that black lives are at risk from.

I don't know if any photo can fully capture and convey the beauty or awesomeness of a natural spectacle as it is seen by the eye. This image doesn't come close to showing the madness of the sight I saw throughout this night and morning - a cloud inversion as far as I could see. It felt like the rest of the world had disappeared under a carpet of cloud, and I totally was alone. At that time that was a very welcomes feeling, but I think if I was stood there today during this time of lockdown it may feel a tad lonely!

This is an unseen image from my night and morning watching the lunar eclipse back in January 2019. I hadn't slept that night, I'd been too busy tending to the four camera's I was using to capture this insane phenomenon, but by the time dawn came, as in this image, I was ready to lay down on the frozen grass and sleep! I'm thankful to my past self for fighting through the tiredness and taking this panorama as it became the foreground image for my lunar eclipse trail picture, one of my favourite images I've ever created.

Sunrise and sunsets have become even more important for me in recent months. With my work schedule it can be really hard to get outside as much as I feel the need to, so when I finally do get a chance, at the end or beginning of a week, it feels so refreshing to sit out on a mountain overlooking more nature than I've seen all week long and breath that tasty mountain air.

This is Skirrid in Abergavenny, taken from Bryn Awr.

I'm becoming increasingly interested in pinhole photography for the unique look of the images, but also for the opportunity to try direct positive photography using a large format camera - essentially, the paper that the image is taken on becomes the print. I hardly ever print so I think this will quickly become a favorite of mine!

These images were taken on a panoramic 35mm film camera at the beautiful Llyn y Fan Fach in the western beacons. I spent a night on the mountain and took a 5-hour exposure through the night, as the moon rose, which resulted in a star trail effect from the moon, otherwise known as a moon trail! Due to the low film speed and relatively low brightness of the stars, it's just the moon that streaks across the sky. I seriously love moon trail images and it along with star trail images is what initially brought my attention to film, so expect to see more throughout the year!

It's been ages since I've managed to get out into the mountains so I thought I'd plug my pet photography! I'm hoping to get out into the mountains ASAP and have some cool panoramic pinhole images shot using a cardboard film camera to share soon so stick around for those 👍 Aaaand of course if you're looking for some special pictures of your pet, then give me bell!

Another post that's been a long time in the making - if you still follow this page, I am still here! In April I'll be spending 6 months on the Scilly Isles which have amazingly dark skies, parts of which are class 2 on the bortle scale which measures light pollution (the darkest parts of Wales is class 3) so I'll have my camera pointing at the stars every single day I can!
In the meantime, here are the images I got of the lunar eclipse a few weeks ago. The third image is admittedly a bit weird - it shows the transit of moon as it moves through the different phases of the lunar eclipse, which is why you can see the orange in the centre. Let me know what you think!

Seeing the stars in London is pretty difficult, let alone the milky way or other astronomical objects. To do that you need to travel as far away from light pollution as you can. These shots were taken in an area north of Aylesbury, were the measure of light pollution is class 5 on the Bortle scale. (Class 9 - inner city, class 1 - at sea) By comparison, many of the locations I shoot at night in Wales are class 3 and you can see the difference that it makes to be even further from sources of light pollution. Here, the detail of the milky way and magnitude of the stars is drastically reduced. Regardless I really like these pictures, particularly with Mars shining through the tree branches and a chance meteor passing through. Let me know what you think!
