Meyer's Lenomys (Lenomys meyeri), Tangkoko august 2024

Finally!!!! On my last visit to Tangkoko, I managed to find this very rare and huge rat, one of the very few folivorous species around. Its known from very few specimens and apparently has a naturally low population density. The forest on the way up to the top of the mountain is simply amazing, wish I could go there more often

Rufous-throated Flycatcher (Ficedula rufigula), Toraut, Bogani Nani Wartabone NP July 2024

On my last visit to Toraut I was delighted to find a number of this tiny Ficedula. Birdlife International states it is widespread and locally common but it is very rarely recorded on birding tours. In 33 Birdtour Asia tours to Sulawesi, we only saw it in two gigs (Once Frank Lambert in 2014 and myself a second time in 2022, although I heard it calling in 2017). But since 2022, I had it in all my visits to the place. Amazing how easily overlooked these tiny little gems can be.

Yesterday could not get any better. My mother's birthday (Wish I was there with you but see you soon!). Spain won. I couldn't watch the game and didn't matter because I was enjoying the Wilson's Bird-of-Paradise (Ciccinurus respublica). And if all that wasn't enough, the icing on the cake came in form my first whale watching trip in Raja Ampat (the first of many I hope). My expectations were so low that I didn't take the camera with me, all much to my frustration since we bagged Omura's Whale, Australian humpback dolphin and Pigmy S***m Whale, wow wow wow. Can't wait to try again! My last day of another crazy good Mammalwatching trip here in West Papua. It was seriously good, with the critically endangered Western Long-beaked Equidna as the jewel of the crown but with very sexy supporting cast like Black-spotted and Ground Cuscuses, Long-fingered Triok, Feather-tailed Possum and many many more. Like is beautiful, have fun you all!

White-rumped Robin (Peneothello bimaculata), Arfaks, West Papua May 2024

Last year I had no time nor the energy to photograph these robins but few days ago, during the nap time, I had a wonderful time with them. This isolated and rarely recorded population sound very different to the ones in the central ranges so im very happy with the excellent sound recordings that I obtained.

Ghana was great for gamebirds and the francolins put on a great show. Latham's Francolin proved to be difficult at daytime, always scurrying away in thick understorey, but p**s easy to find at night. On the other hand, I was expecting White-throated Francolin to be difficult to photograph but it ended performing admirably.
