There are times when you're working on a story that leaves you perplexed, whether because of the access you’ve gained or the story itself. You sense its potential, but at times, it’s hard to gauge how others will perceive it.

When .aldama and I worked on this piece, we believed it was a powerful story—visually striking, with a rare opportunity to speak freely with Russian prisoners, even if only for a short time.

Yet, pitching it to multiple media outlets has led to a disappointing outcome. While unexpected, it's a reminder that nothing is guaranteed in this industry.

(especially when Trump dominates the news cycle 24/7, leaving little room for other narratives)

Connections, timing, and luck can be just as important as the story.
