An international team of archaeologists has uncovered mummified human remains dating back up to 14,000 years across parts of Southeast Asia. The bodies were found in unusually tight, curled positions that immediately puzzled researchers.

With no written records to explain the practice, scientists believe these hunter-gatherer communities used controlled fire and smoke to preserve bodies while keeping the bones intact. The method appears deliberate, careful, and far more sophisticated than previously expected for the period.

The discovery reshapes understanding of early mortuary practices in the region, suggesting complex ritual behavior long before the rise of agriculture or permanent settlements.

Archaeologists in North Carolina have uncovered an extraordinary 28-foot Native American canoe believed to be around 1,000 years old, resting beneath the waters of Lake Waccamaw. This ancient vessel offers an incredibly rare window into the daily lives and craftsmanship of the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe, whose ancestors once used such canoes to navigate rivers and lakes for fishing, trade, and travel.

Waterlogged sediments preserved the canoe for centuries, allowing experts to safely excavate and conserve it with extreme care. Researchers are now studying its design, wood type, and construction techniques, which display remarkable skill and ingenuity, proof of the tribe’s sophisticated understanding of engineering long before modern tools existed.

Beyond its archaeological value, the canoe carries deep cultural meaning. It will soon be preserved as a heritage artifact and displayed to honor the Waccamaw Siouan people’s enduring connection to their land and waters. The discovery stands as a bridge between the past and present, reminding us of the artistry and resilience of Indigenous innovation.
