The last batch from my Cuba photo workshop last week. Life in Cuba is complex, Havana is falling in on itself except for government buildings. There's trash in the streets, people begging for food everywhere and yet lots of smiles and warmth. We went to Cienfuego where the streets were clean and many private buildings where pristine, at least on the outside. A theater built in the 1880's was beautiful and in need of updating. We drove through a small village and needed a public restroom. There weren't any stores or gas stations, so our guide stopped a man on the street and he invited us into his house to use his bathroom. The house was pristine, there was a pot of rice and beans cooking over a wood fire in the back because they had no other fuel and they had electricity for an hour a day. His in-laws live there and they were all smiles and happy to talk with the Americans. In Trinidad we came across a dance class in a courtyard. The kids were working hard and following the advice of their teacher. I am inspired by the spirit of the Cuban people.

One of the most interesting experiences during my Cuba photography workshop was visiting a Santeria ceremony. Dozens of people were packed into a little house where they banged drums, chanted and circled the room. It was loud, the people were moved and didn't mind that we were there photographing, until it was time for the young woman in white to come out. We weren't allowed to photograph that so we left. I don't know what happened then, I probably don't want to. They had a couple of areas of offerings of items or food. They do animal sacrifices as part of the ceremony, which is done help a person's soul do something. There was a pigeon hanging by its feet in the front door, I noticed it right before I hit my head on it.

During my Cuba photo workshop we went to the famous Rafael Trejo boxing gym. It is mostly outdoors with a tin roof over the ring. They train pros down to kids, it was mostly youth working out while we were there. They were rather intense.

I just got back from Cuba and still have a ton of photos to go through. What always strikes me there is the resiliency of the people. Between what the Cuban government and American government have done over the past 60+ years it is amazing they have survived at all. The first group of photos are the faces of Cuba. More photos to come.

Yesterday I went to the ruins of a town that was leveled during the Spanish civil war. The guide showed us the crumpled wall that was all that was left of her father’s house. The battle for the town was basically so the side that was losing the war could have a victory and get positive stories in newspapers. There was hand to hand combat in the streets and in houses just because the extreme left and right couldn’t bend a little. As hard as it may seem we need to find a way to come together after this election and not push farther apart.

Pictures and words can't convey the feeling I get when I view a total solar eclipse. We drove four hours this morning from Dallas into Arkansas and shared the experience with great people at New Hope Church in Glenwood. This is a quick edit tonight of the corona during totality. More coming tomorrow after a good night's sleep.

I just finished my Florida birds photography workshop over the weekend. It will take me a while to go through the photos, I'm driving to Dallas for the eclipse on Monday. I did take time to process a fun shot of a tricolor heron taking flight in the early morning light.

A beautiful squall came through during my annual Vermont Winter Photo Workshop and went wild for 15 minutes. You can't beat a red barn in a snowstorm.

These horses were chillin in a field during our last snowstorm. They seem like they could use a bit more loving.
