One Last Walk 🌸

After a day exploring the Hirosaki Sakura Festival, I returned in the evening to see the cherry blossoms illuminated along the castle moat.

The crowds had thinned, the reflections had settled, and for a moment the entire scene felt almost still.

Later that night I made my way back to a capsule hotel and onsen, tired from walking but reluctant to leave one of the most beautiful places I visited in Japan.

Sometimes the best part of travelling isn’t the destination itself, but those quiet moments at the end of the day when everything finally slows down.

“At least it isn’t raining.”

A few seconds after crossing into Yoshinogawa on the walk between Temple 10 and Temple 11 of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, we made the mistake of tempting fate.

The heavens opened.

Ahead of me, Calum continued across the bridge, his sugegasa pilgrim hat strapped to his pack, a symbol carried by pilgrims for centuries as they make their way around Shikoku’s 88 temples.

What followed was hours of rain, wet boots, and a lesson in accepting whatever the road decides to give you.

Looking back, it’s one of the moments I remember most clearly—not because it was comfortable, but because it became part of the story.

Capturing Sakura 🎨🌸

Away from the busiest paths of the Hirosaki Sakura Festival, I came across an artist painting beneath the cherry blossoms.

While thousands of visitors were photographing the famous red bridge and sakura, he was taking a slower approach—carefully recreating the scene brushstroke by brushstroke.

Watching him work felt like a reminder that some moments are worth more than a quick photograph.

Between the Poses 🌸

A few moments after I took the previous photograph, the groom began balancing his way across the bridge while his partner looked on.

It was a small, unscripted moment during their pre-wedding photoshoot, but one that felt just as memorable as the posed photographs.

Sometimes the photographs we remember most are the ones that weren’t planned.

Light and Silence

Hundreds of lanterns hang from the ceiling of Nishi Hongan-ji, one of Kyoto’s most important Buddhist temples.

As I stood beneath them, a lone monk moved quietly through the hall, framed by the lanterns above and the light beyond the doorway.

The scene lasted only a moment, but it captured something I came to appreciate throughout Japan: even in places visited by thousands of people, moments of stillness can still be found.

125 kilometres, 19 temples, countless memories. 🚶⛩️

For six days, and I walked the opening stages of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, travelling from Temple 1 through Temple 19 across Tokushima Prefecture.

There were early starts, sore feet, unexpected detours, cherry blossoms, temple bells, convenience store lunches, and more conversations than I can remember.

The pilgrimage is often described as a spiritual journey, but for me it was equally a lesson in slowing down. Day after day, the only objective was the next temple, the next stamp, and the next step.

Looking back, it wasn’t any single temple that made the experience special—it was the journey between them.

A Pilgrim’s Companion 🌸🐊

While walking between Temple 10 (Kirihata-ji) and Temple 11 (Fujii-dera) on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, I stopped for the evening at Egawa Kamojima Park.

As lanterns illuminated the cherry blossoms overhead, I found an unexpected travelling companion hiding amongst the sakura.

Not every memory from a pilgrimage comes from a temple. Sometimes it’s a quiet evening, a canopy of blossoms, and a small companion sharing the road ahead.

Under the Sakura 🌸

While photographing the cherry blossoms in Kenrokuen Garden, I noticed this couple crossing a small bridge beneath a canopy of blooms.

A quiet moment, perfectly reflected in the still water below.

Afterwards, I learned this wasn’t their wedding day, but a pre-wedding photoshoot—a beautiful tradition that felt perfectly at home amongst the sakura.

Ishiura-jinja Shrine, Kanazawa, Japan 🇯🇵

Tucked away beside the bustle of Kanazawa, I stumbled upon a tunnel unlike any torii gate path I’d seen before.

Thousands of colourful omikuji (fortune slips) lined the walkway, transforming a simple shrine path into a corridor of colour and light. Shot wide open at f/1.8, I wanted to isolate the centre of the scene and let the sea of fortunes fade into a soft blur around the edges.

A reminder that travel is often about the unexpected discoveries you weren’t looking for.
