Un Mundo. A World. Painted by an 18-year-old girl from the Spanish provinces in 1929.

Angeles Santos Torroella was born in Portbou, Catalonia, and moved to Valladolid at sixteen, where she took painting classes — far from Madrid, far from the cultural scene, far from everything. Two years later she painted this massive, dreamlike surrealist canvas and blew everyone's minds.

Un Mundo caused a sensation at the Autumn Salon in Madrid, and suddenly this unknown girl from the provinces was rubbing shoulders with Federico Garcia Lorca and Juan Ramon Jimenez.

Today the painting lives at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid — and she lived to see it hang there, dying in 2013 at the age of 101.

An incredibly gifted surrealist. A woman the art world forgot and rediscovered multiple times. Worth knowing.

Born in 1923 in Barcelona, Antoni Tàpies grew up to become one of the most powerful voices in 20th-century Spanish art. Known for his expressive material paintings, he built up thick layers of paint, sand, cement, and marble dust until his canvases felt like cracked, ancient walls — the raw texture of Barcelona itself.

His works are held in some of the world's greatest institutions, including MoMA in New York, the Tate in London, and the Reina Sofía in Madrid.

But to truly understand Tàpies, you come to Barcelona. In 1984, he founded the Fundació Antoni Tàpies, housed in the historic Montaner i Simon publishing house in the heart of the Eixample — a space dedicated to his life's work and the promotion of contemporary art.

It stands proudly as one of Barcelona's big three must-see art museums, alongside the Fundació Joan Miró and the Museu Picasso.

⚠️Hidden secret in Madrid for film lovers⚠️

Located in the Lavapiés barrio, Cine Doré is one of the last Art Nouveau buildings standing in the city — and it's still showing films. Classic, indie, and international screenings for as little as €2.50. The summer terrace is the perfect spot for a pre-film drink.

Most people walk straight past it. Don't be most people.

Today we want you to discover Helen Bur.

British muralist, painting walls across the globe — from Brazil to Norway, Finland to the USA. Her large-scale figurative works blend classical painting techniques with urban storytelling, capturing quiet, mysterious moments.

Themes of identity, womanhood, and social consciousness run through her pieces, with a poetic, understated touch.

She also painted a tribute mural to the late — the soul she puts in her work is self-evident.

One to watch and one to follow.
