Flying Roots in Brazil 🇧🇷

For the first time, this body of work was presented in the heart of the Mata Atlântica🌱🌴. The photographs of the Bearded Vulture suspended among the vegetation, becoming part of the landscape itself.
It was also the first solo exhibition of tricolour cyanotypes to be presented worldwide.

The vivid colours of the tricolour cyanotypes are created using plant roots, inspired by the natural pigments involved in the Bearded Vulture’s own extraordinary behaviour of staining its feathers 🦅

Bringing this bird, and this little-known ritual, into a completely different part of the world created a powerful dialogue between species, landscape and colour.

A special encounter between the Bearded Vulture and the Atlantic Forest.

Flying Roots has arrived in Brazil 🇧🇷🌿

What began as a journey following the Bearded Vulture and its extraordinary relationship with colour has travelled across landscapes, countries, and now continents.

In this exhibition, photography meets science, nature, and experimental processes. Through tricolour cyanotypes created with plant's roots, and sunlight, Flying Roots explores how colour can tell stories of survival, adaptation, and our connection with the natural world.

So grateful to share this project here, surrounded by new people, conversations, and landscapes that continue to inspire me.

A 3-metre cyanotype? Yes, it is. 💙

This piece was created using one single life-size negative, one exposure, and one print. No separate negatives, no digital stitching, just one giant negative measuring nearly 3 metres (almost twice my height, as you can see in the third photo!) 🙋‍♀️.

The print is made at a 1:1 scale with the wingspan of a Bearded Vulture🦅, one of Europe’s most iconic birds of prey. An adult can reach an impressive 2.8–2.9 metre wingspan, and I wanted viewers to experience that scale in a way that photographs on a screen simply can’t convey.

Creating a cyanotype of this size was one of the most technically challenging pieces I’ve ever made. From producing and handling such a large negative to coating 🖌️, exposing ⛅️, and washing the paper evenly 🚿, every step required precision, patience, and more than a little faith that it would all come together.

But the challenge was worth it, don’t you think?

Sometimes, the best way to understand a species is not only to see it, but to stand beside it and realise just how extraordinary it truly is.

What looks like painting is actually part of the cyanotype process. 👩‍🎨

After exposure and washing, I use hot water and a brush to clean and refine specific areas of the print💧Each cyanotype requires precise registration, and hours of manual work 🤲

Tricolour cyanotype is a complicated technique that requires a lot of practice and patience (and I’m not exactly known for that 😅). After many years of experimenting with it, I’ve learned how each photo reacts differently to water, temperature, and humidity 👩‍🔬

I write down the process that works best for each photo, each animal, and its colours, like a laboratory notebook 📝

I’m so happy to work with tricolour cyanotype. I love how its chemistry allows me to learn so much about bird coloration 🩵💛💚
