Often, people I work with ask me if photography is my full-time job. Yes, it is sir.
Then I often hear (after a moment of silence) - That’s incredible. I would also love to do something creative.
To which I can’t help but think to myself…
What would you do if you weren’t scared?
What would you choose as your career?
And before that, what kind of things would you try? Because actually that’s the only way to find out what you really want to do.
And then, once you achieve it, maybe - probably - what would you do if you weren’t scared to change and start something new again?
Many years ago, when I moved to Barcelona and was determined to make photography my full-time job, a friend gave me this book - “Feel the fear and do it anyway”. It stuck with me. (You don’t need to read it all, the title says it all;).
I don’t believe it’s procrastination or laziness that prevents people from achieving their dreams. It’s a deep fear of rejection and failure.
So…
What if you keep asking yourself every day - what would I do today, if I wasn’t scared?
Then… feel the fear and do it anyway.
Today. Tomorrow. The day after tomorrow.
In small steps. Take the class, send that email, make a phone call, put a post on Instagram. With time, it will all compound. And one day, you’ll look back and see how far you’ve come, and what you’ve built. Despite being scared.
Because the truth is, we are all scared. Even the “successful” people on the Internet.
