🇪🇪 Tallinn, Estonia pt2 🇪🇪

Nearly anywhere you walk in Tallinn, you are gifted incredible views of several of the city’s iconic towers. The patchwork black and green tower you can see in the majority of these photos is the spire of St. Olaf’s Church, built in the 12th century. It’s hard to look out over the rooftops and towers of this city and not imagine your looking out at something from a fairytale or some kind of fantasy book.

In Warsaw, if you walk north of Old Town a bit, there’s a spot where you can watch the uniquely red and yellow trams travelling over Gdański Bridge. There is no railing or barriers or anything so you can stand right in the middle of the tracks taking pictures like an idiot. If you want.

Just for fun, here are two versions of the same photo: Bicycles in front of Sint Servaasbrug Bridge in Maastricht, The Netherlands. One of the photos was shot on 35mm film with an Olympus film camera and one was shot on digital with a Canon DSLR. Can you tell which one is which??
You probably can, but they definitely aren’t a million miles apart, although, technologically, what the photos were shot on is about 50-60 years apart.

For anyone interested, the film photo was shot with an Olympus OM-1 using Kodak Porta 400 35mm film through an Olympus Zuico 35-105mm f3.5 lens. The digital was shot on a Canon 6D full frame DSLR (which is 35mm equivalent sensor size) through a Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L Lens.

This street band in Kraków was killing it with some ska tunes next to Rynek Główny (the central market square). Sticking up over the rooftop in the background, and the second photo, is St Mary’s Basilica 🇵🇱

One more from Rome of the Colosseum. Nearly 2000 years old and still looking incredible! My favourite fun fact I’ve read is, there are historical records the colosseum was, at least once, filled with water for a simulated sea battle. This is still debated, but I’d like to believe it’s true!

If you’d like to see Trevi Fountain without six million people surrounding it, go sometime after midnight. There will be either no one one else there or very few people and you’ll basically have the place to yourself. It’s manic during the day and takes some serious cropping to get a photo like this without the crowds.

Isn’t it strange how memories can shift over time. I visited Trevi Fountain about 6 or 7 years ago and being there again this year felt like a completely different experience. I hardly recognized the streets and buildings surrounding it and, other than the fountain itself, it felt like a new place. Even the fountain (and the colosseum which I also visited then) looked the same but felt different. Maybe my memory isn't great (probably!), or maybe I've changed over the years. Let's say bad memory 😄

Roman rooftops. I’ll never get tired of the views you get looking out over the rooftops in so many European cities. This view is looking west from Piazza del Quirinale towards St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

Only had a half a day to explore Rome, but what a city! So much history and so much to explore but with a limited time there I had to be selective with what to see. I took the metro to the Colosseum, which is mind blowing in real life, then walked across town to the Trevi Fountain and finished the afternoon at the Spanish Steps. I’m already thinking about when I can go back to explore everything I missed!

These are from both Venice and Verona but they didn’t really fit with other posts and I didn’t feel they made sense on their own.

First, a market square with Rialto Bridge in the background.

Second, a Venetian canal I took my first night in the city.

Third, that famous balcony in Verona that inspired the one in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Forth is Ponte di Castelvecchio in Verona.

And the last one is part of Porta Borsari which is the ancient Roman gate in Verona. It used to be the entrance to the city and it was built early in the 1st century nearly two thousand years ago.
