"Union" – A Story of Survival, Strength, and Hope
This month marks the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine—a war that has displaced millions and continues to cause unimaginable suffering.
That's why this February I chose my artwork, "Union," for exhibition at the Andakulova Gallery in Dubai. It can also be viewed by those in Valencia, Spain, at Hotel Palacio Santa Clara (see second image).
Union portrays Hanna Potiryayeva, a 34-year-old Ukrainian woman whose life changed forever when war reached her home. Her story is one of survival, resilience, and an unbreakable spirit.
“On February 24, 2022, at 6:30 AM, my sister-in-law called us, her voice shaking. ‘The war has started.’ Those words echoed in my mind, but I refused to believe them. We lived in Irpin, a peaceful city near Kyiv. We had a home, jobs, friends, dreams. How could this be happening?”
Escaping Irpin was a terrifying journey—hours on blocked roads, tanks rolling through streets they once called home. With her children, Hanna drove through nine countries, eventually reaching Valencia, Spain, while her husband stayed behind to help evacuate others. Meanwhile, Irpin was being destroyed—70% of the city reduced to rubble.
“Every day, the news got worse. People we knew died. Our home was gone. My children grew up overnight. We lost everything—except hope.”
Participating in "Female Portraits" was vital for Hanna. She believes art keeps their voices alive, reminding the world that Ukraine’s war is not just about weapons but values—the battle between good and evil.
“If Ukraine doesn’t win, the whole world loses.”
Her story is not unique—millions of families have been torn apart—but it is a testament to human strength and unity.
Through Union, I hope to honor Hanna and all those who continue to fight, not only for survival but for justice, freedom, and peace.
