📍 Ostuni, the famous White City of Puglia… which on our visit looked slightly more like the Moody Grey City of Dramatic Clouds™ ☁️😅
But honestly? The weather only made it better.
The narrow white streets were glowing against the dark sky like somebody turned the contrast settings all the way up. Every alley looked cinematic. Every staircase looked like it was leading either to a hidden trattoria or a medieval side quest. 🏰
Ostuni is called “La Città Bianca” because almost all the buildings in the old town were traditionally painted with white lime. Originally this wasn’t just aesthetic Instagram strategy from the 15th century. The lime actually helped disinfect houses during times of plague and reflected the brutal southern Italian summer heat. Smart and photogenic. 🤍
We wandered through tiny streets full of stone arches, flower pots, old ladies guarding balconies, and cats operating under complete local authority. 🐈
At the top of the hill stands the stunning Ostuni Cathedral with one of the largest rose windows in Europe. Meanwhile below, the entire city spills down the hillside in layers of white houses that look like someone carefully stacked sugar cubes toward the Adriatic Sea.
The clouds kept threatening rain all day, but never really won. Puglian weather basically said:
“I will create atmosphere… but I respect your sightseeing schedule.” 🌩️🤝
And honestly, wandering Ostuni under dramatic skies felt even better than perfect sunshine. Less postcard. More adventure movie
