Sometimes the first step is simply making space for what is calling you.

If Blue Motion resonates, this is a gentle invitation to join us.

Early Bird closes July 15.

21 days in Dahab, Egypt, exploring somatic freediving, water dance, and embodied filmmaking through a practice of deep attention, movement, and image-making.

We hope to meet you there.

remembering last year’s crew and the particular quality of attention we found together in Dahab — a place where the desert meets the sea at the edge of a continent, where the water is warm and the visibility endless, and something in the body just... releases.
the Red Sea holds you differently here. freediving becomes less about depth and more about listening. creativity stops being something you make and starts being something you receive.
missing these people. missing that water. missing what we became in it.

How does a project take shape through collaboration, mentorship, and place?

Dahab sits where desert meets sea — mountains of sand and stone on one side, the Red Sea opening wide on the other. Everything here moves at a different pace: slower mornings, long light, the kind of quiet that shapes how you work.

For three weeks, Blue Motion isn’t only where we train and film — it’s where we live. Shared or private rooms, each with shower, wifi, and AC. Meals are taken care of, so the only thing on the schedule is water, movement, and rest.

A warm pool close enough to step into between sessions.
A studio with the sea in view.
The days move between water, movement, and footage — but the in-between time matters just as much. Reviewing the day’s footage on a shared screen. Falling asleep to the sound of the sea.
This is the part that doesn’t always make it into the program description: the residency as a living space, not just a schedule. A creative coliving, shaped by Dahab itself — where the desert opens space, and the sea opens depth.

( plus a little BTS from our last residnency ! )

OCTOPUS — A 5-Day Deep Water Dance Retreat
Dahab, Egypt · 23–27 September
🐙 Become an oceanic mammal apprentice.

OCTOPUS is a five-day immersion into (Deep) Water Dance — a practice weaving freediving, somatic movement, and contact improvisation. It’s a reawakening of the body as a sensing, relational organism, remembering how to belong within water.

Like the octopus, we practice another way of knowing. You begin to feel yourself not as a separate mover, but as part of a living field: shaped by it, shaping it in return. Interspecies relation, fluid intelligence, cellular remembering.

Supported by freediving fundamentals, we dance between surface and depth — up to 10m — entering a living dialogue with the ocean. Through buoyancy, spirals, shared weight, and simple compositional scores, the body remembers a fluency it forgot it had.

This is an invitation to step beyond the human-centered view and rejoin the wider story of the Earth.
We’ll stay together in a boutique villa in Dahab — just ours, a small pod by the water, between desert and sea.

✦ No prior freediving experience needed — you’ll learn it here. You’ll want to be a comfortable snorkeler.
✦ Guided by Ola Hasia, Jess Hepin & Ruben Gepner.

There’s a question that keeps surfacing in embodied filmmaking: 𝒘𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒂 𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈?

Most cinematography training teaches to observe — to be invisible, neutral, a window. But a growing body of practice is asking something different: 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒂 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒂 𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒘 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒂 𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒚?

What if the filmmaker’s nervous system, breath, and attention are already shaping what gets seen — and the work is to make that relationship conscious rather than pretend it doesn’t exist?

This is the territory that scholars like Maura McDonnell and practitioners in somatic cinema have been mapping for years. It’s what phenomenologists call the “lived body” — the idea that perception is never abstract; it always arrives through a specific, breathing, sensing self.

Maurice Merleau-Ponty called it être-au-monde — being-in-the-world — the insistence that mind and body are not separate instruments but one integrated way of knowing.

Underwater, that integration becomes impossible to ignore. You cannot hold your breath and pretend to be absent. The pressure, the silence, the resistance of water against the lens — they pull the filmmaker out of their head and into full somatic presence.

What emerges tends to be footage that feels different, even when viewers can’t say exactly why. It’s not a technique. It’s a state.

At Blue Motion, we call this practice embodied cinematography. We work with it not as a theory but as a daily discipline — in the water, on the surface, in the edit.

The mask in this image is one frame of that investigation: identity held at arm’s length, examined, offered back.
