🤯 Thysanozoon flatworms can lift off the reef and travel by waving their whole flat body, edges rolling like cloth in a breeze.
This gold-dotted one does exactly that in the Red Sea off Safaga, sailing up through the water with its white rim rippling 🌊

🚢 Inside the Salem Express, slipping through a restaurant window into the still hall of the deep. The tables are still bolted to the deck, the chairs long gone, and silt rests where meals once were.
Outside, a rescue boat lies on the sand, never launched 🚤, and beneath the hull a whitetip reef shark rests quietly 🦈.
A wreck to dive with respect. The ship remains 💙

🇳🇱 Binnen in de Salem Express: door een restaurantraam de stille zaal van de diepte in. De tafels staan nog vastgeschroefd aan het dek, de stoelen zijn allang weg en er ligt slib waar ooit gegeten werd.
Buiten ligt een reddingsboot op het zand, nooit te water gelaten 🚤, en onder de romp rust een witpuntrifhaai 🦈.
Een wrak om met respect te duiken. Het schip blijft 💙

🇪🇬 جوّه عبّارة سالم إكسبريس… بندخل من شبّاك المطعم لقاعة هادية في عمق البحر. الترابيزات لسه متثبّتة في السطح، والكراسي راحت من زمان، والرمل نازل مكان ما الناس كانت بتاكل.
برّه، قارب نجاة نايم على الرمل وعمره ما نزل الميّة 🚤، وتحت المركب قرش الشعاب أبيض الزعنفة مستريح في هدوء 🦈.
حطام بنغوص فيه باحترام. المركب لسه هنا 💙

A hush more tender than sleep attends the walls 🪨 of Sha’ab Sheer, where the reef leans inward and the canyons open like quiet rooms. Light descends in long pale shafts ☀️, broken and mended on the stone, a w**e of gold poured slowly through the blue 🌊.
One glides as if the current itself had learned courtesy; no haste, only the soft grammar of depth. Between the ergs the passages narrow, and the sun becomes a ribbon laid upon the floor ✨. Beauty here is not a shout but a low continuous warmth 💓: one would linger in the canyon’s hush, though time, like a fading ray, must thin and vanish.
The walls remain, patient and inhabited, forever receiving the light and giving it back 🌅.

A drowsy numbness almost pains the sense as one slips into the coral garden 🪸 of Sha’ab Sheer, so ripe is the beauty, so clustered the life 🐠✨.
Brain-corals swell like vintage grapes of stone 🍇; table-corals hold their platters of silent feast; seafans tremble with a w**e of purple and gold 🍷. One tastes colour—the anthias a sudden spice 🌶️, the sweetlips a lingering sweetness. Light is crushed into jewels 💎 and spilled again.
A crocodile fish 🐊 lies camouflaged as a thought too heavy to rise. Beauty here is not a distant urn but a living ache 💓: one would stay and stay, though the tank’s measure 🤿, like the nightingale’s song 🎶, must end. The reef remains, a Grecian stillness that yet pulses, forever warm and still to be enjoyed 🌅.

Predator of the deep

🪸 **The only catfish that belongs among corals.**

While its freshwater cousins patrol muddy rivers, *Plotosus lineatus* occupies the living architecture of the Indo-Pacific:

🌊 the reef
🏖️ the tide pool
🌿 the seagrass meadow
⏳ the sandy pocket, one to sixty metres.

🔄 Euryhaline, it slips without ceremony from full salt to estuary — and, on occasion, into East African fresh water.

🚪 Since 2002 it has also colonised the Levantine Sea, a Lessepsian migrant that found the Mediterranean hospitable.

🌀 Juveniles work the open sand in their dense schools.
🌑 Adults prefer the shade of ledges by day.

🐚 The habitat is not scenery but livelihood: every grain stirred may yield a crustacean, a polychaete, a hidden mollusc.

The fish does not decorate the reef.
It inhabits it — with the quiet industry of a creature that has solved the problem of being both conspicuous and well defended.
