The history of Kuremaa Manor reaches back to the sixteenth century, when it was separated from the lands of Laiuse Order Castle. Over the centuries, the manor belonged to the Wrangell, Ungern-Sternberg, Pistohlkors and Liphart families, until Alexander von Oettingen bought it in 1834 and shaped it into one of Livonia’s most representative manor complexes. The late Classicist main building, designed by architect Emil Julius Strauss, was completed in 1847–1853 and is regarded as a sister building of Suure-Kõpu Manor. A spacious park, avenues and numerous outbuildings were created around the manor, several of which have survived to the present day. After the expropriation of manors, a school of home economics began operating in the main building, later followed by an agricultural school. Today, the restored manor is open to visitors and houses a museum room, accommodation and various event spaces. Together with Lake Kuremaa, the manor park and the historic windmill, the manor forms one of Jõgeva County’s best-known cultural and tourism ensembles.
