Experience the Iida Toroyama Festival (飯田燈籠山祭り) in Suzu, Ishikawa Prefecture, a traditional Japanese summer matsuri on the Noto Peninsula. This peaceful video captures the sights and sounds of the festival just as they are, with no added music. You will only hear the authentic atmosphere of taiko drums, flutes and festival chants.

The Iida Toroyama Festival is one of Suzu’s most famous summer traditions, featuring towering lantern floats (toroyama) paraded through the streets together with smaller dashi floats adorned with lanterns and packed with celebrating children. The largest Toroyama is roughly 16m tall, topped with a giant glowing lantern float in the shape of a great mythological figure. It takes a team of locals to pull these massive floats through the streets.

Although Suzu and the Noto Peninsula are still recovering from the damage caused by the Great Noto Earthquake, the community continues to come together for the Iida Toroyama Festival. The sight of residents uniting to carry on their traditions despite hardship reflects the indomitable spirit and resilience of the people of Noto.

Step back in time to the peaceful mountain villages of Gokayama, Japan. Gokayama is a hidden gem and UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled deep in Toyama Prefecture.

In this silent travel film, we explore the traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses of Ainokura and Suganuma, framed by blooming cherry blossoms and snowy mountain air. The centuries-old thatched-roof homes are characterized by their steeply slanting thatched roofs, resembling hands clasped together in prayer.

We also captured a rare spring festival featuring a traditional Shishimai Lion Dance, complete with an enormous lion puppet operated by skilled performers. It is definitely a local cultural highlight.

We Hiked for 4 Days in silence on Japan’s Sacred Pilgrimage, the Kumano Kodo Kohechi.

Step into the heart of Japan’s sacred mountains on one of the country’s most challenging and least-traveled pilgrimage routes. This immersive hiking video follows the Kohechi route of the Kumano Kodo, an arduous, centuries-old spiritual trail connecting the sacred mountaintop of Koyasan to the revered Kumano Hongu Taisha shrine through rugged, mystical terrain.

Seven years after completing the Nakahechi route, we return to Kumano Kodo, which is one of only two pilgrimage UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Hiking Japan's holy Hakusan is a chance to connect with nature and experience the divine. Mount Haku (白山) is one of Japan’s three sacred peaks, and is well-known for its abundant wildflowers. In addition to an amazing sunrise at the summit, we traversed a gorgeous ridge on the way to the peak of Mt. Bessan during our 3 days hiking and camping in the national park.
