Battle of the Nectar 🌺🐝

Whilst trying to photograph these insanely fast green sweat bees in the baking heat of the rainforest, I was able to capture this moment when two bees where head on fighting for the nectar on the plant. For a single shot I’m very happy with the result and also the fact that the background colour changes on either side of the stem, something I wish I could have said I planned 😉🤣

First Damselfly of the year!

I was able to dust off the camera, which I haven’t used for macro since September last year and tried my best to find some insects to photograph, even if it was the middle of the day and the worst time to go searching. I was very lucky to be able to find a few damselflies that were cooperative enough to focus stack in front of coloured background cards.

Hope you like my first Damselfly of the year!

Where you start you stack…matters! 📸

So here is an interesting set of pictures showing the different starting points within a stack and how you can change this to add more or less depth to your image.

Focus stacking is being able to take a number of photos at different focal points, from the front to the back of the subject, then merging all the photos together in editing. This is to obtain more depth of field and such great magnifications and to also produce greater detail than with a single shot.

The first image is a a 65 stack of a jumping spider within its webbed cacoon that it makes to rest in. I start my stack right at the tip of the front legs so I could get the whole spider in focus. In turn, this got all the webbing at the front of the cacoon in focus too, which goes right through the eyes and can be distracting, unless you are wanting to show the structure of the we, which I think is pretty cool.

The second photo is the same stack but I’ve took away 30 images from the front of the stack. This means that the front of the web cacoon is completely out of focus which brings a clear image of the jumping spider. Both have there uses, first for its environment and the second for the detail of the jumping spider.

I just thought it would be interesting to show you!

Which one do you prefer? Tell me in the comments!

A new Guest to my hotel room 🦗
BONUS SHOTS ➡️

When we came back from the pool to get ready for our evening meal, we were greeted by this bright orange grasshopper on the table, it must have got into the room through the balcony sliding door!

It stayed where it was whilst I took some stacks of it from underneath the table with the camera pointing up. I also wanted to get the environment of the hotel room in the background, I took a few shots but realised I wanted to be in it.

With a very big ask, I asked my girlfriend if she could try and take a wide angle shot of me with the grasshopper. As ridiculous as it might have sounded as she was trying to get ready for our meal, she agreed to give it a go. She has never held a camera in her life and with the image being upside down due to the extra glass of the cctv lens and using manual focus, I was shocked at how well she got us in the photo. Big thanks to my biggest supporter, my fiancée.

A little Hermit crab 🐚 🦀

I haven’t been very active with my photography lately, I have had a little break from posting on social media which has made me excited again to share my images. So I think my first image back of a hermit crab is pretty fitting, considering I’ve been a bit of a hermit!

I was excited to notice some very small hermit crabs whilst sunbathing on the beach on holiday in Mexico. As I get pretty bored sitting there, burning my pasty skin in the sun. I normally can’t sit still and like to hunt around for wildlife whilst my partner lays in the sun. I was able to notice these tiny shells that when turned over, had a very small claw sticking out of it. People were interested in what I was looking at and I had the joy of explaining what they were.

I went back at night, hoping to find other insects to photograph with my camera. But to my disbelief, there was at least 8 hermit crabs wondering about the sand floor and rather large ones too! I quickly changed my 90mm macro lens to the 12-45 wide angle lens due to their size and start to get as many shots as I could. They seemed to enjoy scaling the trees, which made it easier to get a lower angle of them.

How cute are those little eyes! 👀
