6 years?! Where has the time gone!

I can’t believe I’ve been doing the hobby for this long, it felt like only yesterday that I was hunting around the local nature reserves looking for whatever insect I could find with my phone and macro clip on lens.

In this series you can see my progression of 6 years. Not just improving my equipment from a mobile phone to a dedicated camera, but also in the field and editing techniques. This was a hobby I never thought existed or one that would interest me, but I’m so glad I tried it back in 2020.

Sometimes I criticise my photography and how it could be better. It’s always good to look back and see how far you’ve come. I’m so glad I’m able to share these images with you and I’m so grateful to have so many people following me and enjoying these creatures just as much as me.



My first Damselfly, I remember this very well. In my first home I had a big nature reserve with two wildlife pools and a fishing pool. When I first started it was my to try and get a photo of a damselfly with my phone. I chased this guy around in middle of the day heat in the summer till I was able to just get close enough for this photo!

The target. Through the years I have had the opportunity to photograph many different damselflies and learn their habits to get close up photos like this. For the past 5 years I still needed to find a white legged damselfly. Little did I know they could be find 20 minutes down the road from me. I love these damselflies and I was so glad to finally photograph them last year.

My first Cellar spider. I’m sure you’ve seen these spiders before. They are normally found in shed or garages and I remember finding this one in my garage. I didn’t think of them much till I really got into macro photography and I was able to zoom into their faces, which you’ll see in the next shot.

Flying across the pond

A couple of shots of this common Dargonfly, flying across the pond as I snapped my shots. These ones were a little hard that dragonflies I had previously captured because they were a lot smaller and quicker. I feel like the first shot, is one of the sharpest in flight shots of a dragonfly that I have taken to date. Taking these types of photos are challenging but a lot of fun.

One of the most beautiful things about frogs, are their eyes. They are like pockets into a galaxy. I love macro, so shooting a frogs eye appeals to me, but I also like to get wider shots to show the subjects. This beauty was found in Ecuador.

Here are the close up shots from my recent family in the living room. Starting of with a photo of a tiny baby cellar spider. You can see just to the left of it that it has already molted and discarded is old exoskeleton. In the distance you can also see a small baby crawling around behind.

The size of the mother. This shows the difference in size from the mother to the babies. These spiders can be cannibals and eat their young sometimes, even though they are very protective over them. Some mother spiders will let their babies eat them to make sure they survive.



A close up swiped of the babies, a lot of the start off as translucent and gain their colour as they grow. You can see here that their bodies are coloured but their legs are still slightly see through.





A close up of a baby climbing up the webbing. From far away these look like prey that the spider has caught and eaten and left in the webbing. It was only when I got up close that I realised they were its young.



The slender mother out stretching her long legs in protection of her young.



The mother will stay with the young till they are old enough to venture on their own and she will then leave. The babies will then disperse and find their own little dark area to live and grow into and repeat the process.

X ALBUM COVERS X

I thought it would be fun to see what some of my insect and macro photography shots would look like as cover photos. Album covers are designed to be abstract and attract the listener. Now what would attract you more than a horse head grasshopper portrait 😂 I feel like a lot of the wider angle shots really suit this style.

Can you think of band or artist names that would fit these album covers?

Why the long face?

A horse head grasshopper shot from deep in the Amazon rainforest, I think this looks pretty cool as an album cover.



Spider in the sky

A garden orb weaver suspended in the air by its web, munching on its prey. I had to get in a really awkward position for this to work 😂



Bug stop

One of my favourite shots to be an album cover. This fly got stuck in the metal grid of a bus stop, unable to get out. After I took this shot I was able to push it free.



Frogs and leaf

A beautiful frog from the Amazon, In this shot the frog looks so small compared to the leaf, but the leaf was actually massive!



Caught up in a web

One shot I couldn’t believe I was able to capture. The spider was wrapping this prey up so quickly I just fired off multiple shots, praying that it was in focus!



Spider embankment

A very large tarantula crawling down the trunk of a tree. Probably one of my favourite wide angle shots!

Does it still count as macro is the spider is the same size as a small dog? 😂



Galaxy eyes

This horned frog had the galaxy and space right within its eyes. Being able to get this close and capture such incredible details was an absolute joy!



Small predators

The smallest thistle mantis waiting patiently on a leaf to capture its prey.
