I was trying to show the rushed looking lifestyle of leafcutter ants, always on the move!! I particularly like the effect... took hundreds of pics to get it right!
It is what i call macro-panning. Its commonly used with birds and mammals, but i havent seen anyone doing it with minute subjects.
Just pan along on a tripod following the ants, using a slow exposure of between a 1/4 and 1/2 a second. I did use some flash as well, just to freeze some of the movement and have a focus point, I will leave it up to the photographers to work out if you use rear or front curtain flash!

Another lovely paramo bird is the Many-striped Canastero, from a recent outing to Antisana Volcano with Luke Allen, a young South African birder who was staying with us. He got his 1000th bird in Antisana!

A magnificent species that shares that cold highland paramo habitat with the Spectacled Bear, the Giant Hummingbird. He is giant in the world of hummingbirds - its almost strange to see a hummingbirds wings beat so slowly!!
