Knocked off its perch πŸͺ² reed beetle macro up close

This one was sitting perfectly on a reed stem β€” right up until I lost my balance and clipped the very stem it was on. Down it went, onto the leaves below, where I ended up taking these instead. Not the setup I’d planned πŸƒ

A metallic reed beetle (genus Donacia), the kind you find around the edges of lakes and ponds. 🌿

These are semi-aquatic beetles with a remarkable trick: their larvae live underwater and tap directly into the air channels inside aquatic plant roots, drawing oxygen straight from the plant. The adults live up top on the floating leaves and reeds. ✨

Climbing through the dew πŸͺ²

A tiny black flea beetle making its way up a dew-covered blade by a small lake, picking its way past droplets almost the size of its own body. πŸ’§

What I love about this one is that two things landed at once β€” the beetle up top, and the droplet below acting as a perfect lens, bending the blade of grass into a sharp little world of its own. Two points of focus on a single diagonal line. πŸ”

Aphthona nonstriata β€” the Iris Flea Beetle. Like all flea beetles it has enlarged hind legs built for jumping, a spring-loaded escape that fires it away faster than you can react. But at six in the morning nothing was moving fast β€” the only thing stirring out there was me. 🌿

Caught in the morning sun πŸͺ° dance fly macro up close

The first trip to Dyrehaven this year. I’d set off a little late β€” up at around 4:10, half an hour of driving, the sun would already be up when I arrived β€” and after a quiet start at the little bog with no damselflies or dragonflies showing yet, my hopes weren’t high. πŸŒ…

But the woods were alive with birdsong, and slowly things turned up. This one was already warmed up by the sun, so it took off the moment I got a little closer. I’d hoped for a series, but this single frame was what it gave me. πŸ“·

Empis trigramma β€” a dance fly. The name comes from their courtship: at dawn and dusk they gather in swarms that rise and fall in the air, bobbing up and down in the low light like a slow dance. Catch them in backlight and the whole swarm glows. ✨

Six long legs on a single reed 🦟 cranefly macro up close

It was holding on to a slim reed with just enough grip to stay put, body almost weightless against the green. Early morning is the sweet spot β€” cool enough that they’re slow and willing to sit for a portrait. πŸ“·

Up close the spotted wings, the deep blue thorax and the long banded legs all come into focus. Ptychoptera contaminata β€” the Orange-marked Cranefly. 🌿

Those impossibly long legs aren’t just for show. They’re designed to break off. If a predator grabs one, the leg detaches at a weak joint β€” autotomy β€” and the cranefly flies away with five. A built-in escape hatch. ✨

Standing on my toes for this one πŸ›‘οΈ stink bug macro up close

This one was a bit up on a wall, head pointing up β€” which meant standing on my toes, camera angled down, trying to hold steady at an angle that fights you the whole way. πŸ“·

I couldn't use the screen either. The ceiling lamp threw a glare across it, and my own diffuser was blocking what little light reached the bug, leaving it too dark to see properly. So it became a guessing game β€” frame, breathe, shoot, hope. 🎯

And yes β€” this is the one with the reputation. Stink bugs have scent glands on the thorax that release a pungent chemical cocktail when they feel threatened. It's a defence mechanism, meant to make them unpleasant enough that predators think twice. You can also see the rostrum here β€” the straw-like mouthpart tucked under the body that it uses to pierce plants and feed. πŸ›

Balloon Flies πŸͺ° Hilara macro up close

Frederiksberg Park, early morning. The runners were starting to come out, glancing sideways at the guy crouched over a plant with a diffuser the size of a small box on top of his camera. πŸ“·

Then I had to back away from the plant entirely to get the wide shot. A fixed 90mm doesn't zoom, so you move. ✨

These are Balloon Flies (genus Hilara). The males are famous for something most insects don't bother with β€” they spin tiny silk balloons, often containing a small prey item, and present them to females as nuptial gifts during courtship. Some species have evolved to wrap the balloon around nothing at all. Empty packaging. 🎁

Black Garden Ant on the reeds 🐜 Lasius niger macro up close

Early morning on the reeds. 🌿

This Black Garden Ant (Lasius niger) was working the joint where a new blade was pushing through the stem β€” the plant's own sap catching the flash and glowing white beneath its feet.

I didn't crop it tight. The context was the point. πŸ“·

Lasius niger β€” the Black Garden Ant. One of the most common insects in Europe, and one of the most overlooked. Up close, that changes fast. The glossy gaster. The alert posture. The compound eye that misses nothing. ✨

Favourite spot, cut back β€” but not empty 🦟 cranefly macro up close

I came back to my favourite spot for the first time this year β€” and it had changed. 🌿

The tall dense reeds that were there last season were gone. Cut back. Just a few small ones left where there used to be a wall of green.

I almost turned around. But I stayed, kept the flash low to let the background breathe, and found this. πŸ“·

Ptychoptera contaminata β€” the Orange-marked Cranefly. Those banded orange and black markings are a warning to predators. And that iridescent blue-green thorax is something you'd never notice at full walking speed. ✨

Some mornings the spot surprises you. This was one of them. πŸ’™

Cute heart-shaped waist β€” that tail is a weapon 🐜

I was crouched over a woodpile in Croatia, flash kit ready, waiting
for a moment that almost never comes with ants.

🌞 This one was moving fast β€” antennae working the air, mandibles ahead,
purpose in every step. The head-on moment came and went in under a second.
A fraction of that was sharp. That fraction became the first shot.

What you’re looking at is a pair of compound eyes built from hundreds of
ommatidia β€” individual lenses, each capturing a separate slice of the
world around it. The brain assembles them into a wide-angle mosaic:
motion-sensitive, tuned to polarised light and chemical gradients we
can’t perceive. It reads a parallel sensory world, entirely.

Two frames. Same individual. The face β€” and the posture that gave it
its name. That heart-shaped gaster, tilted upward. That’s the β€œcocktail”:
when alarmed, Crematogaster aims it like a weapon, releasing chemical
signals that mobilise the whole colony in seconds.

You don’t stalk ants. You follow them, adjust your settings, and hope
the light holds.
