A year ago I was working full speed on a special edition of HÅNDVÆRK bookazine for Hotel- og Restaurantskolen (HRS) ’s project Gejst.
These photos are from the Chocolate Workshop, here, the students learn about the journey from cocoa bean to chocolate bar and explore the sensory properties of chocolate and, not least, how to optimize them.

Happy Midsummer 🌿🔥
— here with the world’s smallest bonfire, photographed in FISKARS VILLAGE for HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no 10

Bookazine no. 10 will introduce you to practising artists and their work as well as the artisans and craftspeople whose knowledge and skills make their artistic production possible. You will also meet an art academy rector, a museum director and a gallery owner and as here visit the artist community in the Finnish village of Fiskars.
In my talk with designer Birgitte Due Madsen, she introduces her materials-based approach, which she calls ‘from one-of-a-kind to more-of-a-kind’. With this, she taps into a long tradition of artists and craft makers alternating between creating unique works of art and collaborating with companies that put their pieces into serial production. A well-known practitioner of this combined approach was Axel Salto, whose work, at the time of writing, is the topic of an exhibition at CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark. You can in the bookazine meet Rikke Salto, who joined the Salto family through marriage. She talks about her work creating chas- ubles in cooperation with Selskabet for Kirkelig Kunst (Danish Society for Ecclesiastical Art.
‘A small number of people do really well, but it’s not enough to be a good artist, you also need to understand the dynamics of the business and have good social skills,’ Søren Ellitsgaard underscores. Since 2003, he has owned and run Litografisk Atelier (Lithographic Studio), which publishes lithographs for several ac- claimed contemporary artists.
Before choosing the life of an artist, it is important to consider and accept the likely prospect of living with a patchwork economy.
What patches might be combined in such a composition is a topic I discuss with visual artist Pernille Kapper Williams.
Welcome to a bookazine about art and its underlying premise, about the urge and passion to create, about per- sistence and confidence, about clay, bronze, hare glue and pigments, about textiles, wood and stone.

‘I look forward to showing you the new place. We open in September,’ said goldsmith Kim Buck, when I interviewed him for bookazine 5 in spring 2021.
He shares the workshop and shop with his wife and colleague,
Kim also mentioned Hongxia’s daughter, isabel wang pontoppidan

At the time, Isabel was studying at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. He said, ‘She never used to take any interest in jewellery, but now she says her plan B is to come home and apprentice in our workshop. I don’t know if I would recommend it, but she’s really talented.’
Shortly after the new place opened, I went to see Hongxia. That led to an interesting conversation and a small online article.

Almost a year ago I met Honxia and Isabell for a mother/ daughter interview published in HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no 14.

Visiting Glasriket in HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no 14

Glasriket or in english The KINGDOM OF CRYSTAL is an area in the Småland province in the south of Sweden – has a long tradition for glassmaking.
During the heyday of the Swedish glass industry, in the late 19th century, half of the country’s 77 glassworks were located in Småland.
Today, the area is still home to several large and medium-sized glassworks in operation and a number of glass studios.
The high concentration of glassworks in Småland is due to a combination of geographic conditions, natural resources and historical and political factors:
– Småland was a poor and thinly populated area, and land was cheap, which made it an attractive location for industry.
– Småland is heavily forested. Glass production consumes a lot of energy, and the original kilns were wood-fired. Nature provided the primary materials: quartz sand and lime. Later, production switched to electric and gas-powered kilns.
– During the 18th and 19th centuries, several glassworks were founded with support from the nobility and the state with the aim of promoting Swedish industry and reducing the dependence on imported glass.
– Småland’s network of rivers – and later, the railway – made it possible to transport glassware throughout Sweden and abroad.

HÅNDVÆRK bookazine on

During the preparations for her solo exhibition, which is currently on display at Designmuseum Danmark , I met her at Statens Værksteder for Kunst

From the article published in HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 14:

Unlike earlier works by Nikoline that were powerful and expressive, in intense colours and often tufted, her expression here is subtle and painterly. Her choice of images and, in particular, her style are familiar, as I make out the figures. In some of the pieces, they lie half-concealed between two layers of silk organza.
Hundreds of metres of silk organza have passed trough her hands over the past two years. Painting the silk is the expressive part of the process, as she mixes the colours, and the colours in turn blend on the silk. Even though she has chosen a given direction, she accepts and appreciates the fact that dyes and silk have a will of their own.

‘It’s been a long time in the making,’ was the author and art historian Vibeke P. Gether’s opening remark at the launch of the book Counterprint etcetera about the Copenhagen designer and textile printmaker Vibeke Rohland Rohland. The launch event was held at the Apollo restaurant at the art centre Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, last week

It has also been long time since I first heard about it, from a clearly honoured Vibeke Rohland. So long in fact, that the ink on the pages of HÅNDVÆRK bookazine 2, where she was featured, was barely dry.

What the f**k matters .. is a fusion of Make This Moment Matter, the official title of the 3daysofdesign festival that was held in Copenhagen last week, and the heading – Design, What the F**k – of a well-attended talk between the architect Jan Gehl and the designer Pil Bredahl in the garden at Designmuseum Danmark on the first day of the festival, combined with my equal enjoyment of and concern over how we talked, snacked, drank and partied our way from street to street, showroom to showroom with the 2008 hit Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow looping in my mind.
