📚 Infinity Book Tower in Prague (“Idiom”)

The “book tower” in Prague you’re looking for is actually called Idiom — a famous art installation inside the Municipal Library of Prague.

✨ What it is
• A tower made of about 8,000 books stacked in a circular column 
• Created by Slovak artist Matěj Krén
• Built in 1998 and placed in the library entrance hall

• There are mirrors at the top and bottom
• When you look inside through the opening, it creates an illusion of endless books

Prague “Book Tower” (Idiom Installation)

📍The famous Book Tower in Prague is an art installation called “Idiom.” It is located inside the Municipal Library of Prague near Old Town Square. The sculpture was created by Slovak artist Matej Krén and has been displayed there since 1998. 

Origin and Creation
• The installation was designed by artist Matej Krén, who often works with books as artistic materials. 
• It is made from about 8,000 real books stacked into a tall cylindrical column. 
• The sculpture first appeared at an exhibition in São Paulo in 1995, before being permanently installed in Prague in 1998. 

Why It Looks Endless

The tower has mirrors at the top and bottom, creating an optical illusion. When you look through the small opening, the reflections make the books appear to go infinitely upward and downward, like a never-ending tunnel of books. 

Meaning of the Artwork

The installation symbolizes the infinite nature of knowledge and literature. The endless reflection represents how learning and ideas continue without limits. 

Today
• It has become one of Prague’s most unusual and Instagram-famous attractions.
• Visitors often line up to peek into the tower and take photos of the illusion. 
• Entry is free, because it is inside the public library. 

✅ Fun fact: Many of the books used in the tower were donated or saved from being discarded, giving them a second life as art.

📍Memorial to the Victims of Communism, located at the foot of Petřín Hill near Újezd in Prague.

History of the Monument

The memorial was unveiled in 2002 to honor the thousands of people who suffered under the communist regime in Czechoslovakia from 1948 to 1989. It was created by Czech sculptor Olbram Zoubek together with architects Jan Kerel and Zdeněk Hölzel.

Meaning of the Statues

The row of bronze figures you see on the stairs represents the gradual destruction of a human being under totalitarian rule.

As you move down the steps:
• The first statue appears whole and strong.
• Each following statue becomes more damaged and fragmented.
• Limbs disappear, bodies crack, and parts dissolve.

This artistic design symbolizes how communism eroded people’s freedom, identity, and dignity.

What the Memorial Commemorates

The plaque near the monument lists statistics of victims during the communist era in former Czechoslovakia, including:
• Thousands imprisoned
• Hundreds executed
• Thousands forced into labor camps
• Many who died trying to escape the regime

The rolling (rotating) head in Prague is a modern kinetic sculpture called “Head of Franz Kafka” (Hlava Franze Kafky). It is located near the Quadrio shopping center in Prague’s New Town and was created by Czech artist David Černý in 2014. 

What the sculpture is
• It is an 11-meter tall stainless-steel bust of the famous writer Franz Kafka. 
• The head is made of 42 separate rotating layers. 
• Each layer can rotate independently, so the face breaks apart and then reforms again. 
• The sculpture weighs about 39 tons and is controlled by motors and cables inside the structure. 

Why it rotates

The moving layers represent the complex mind and inner struggles of Franz Kafka, a Prague-born writer known for surreal and psychological stories. When the pieces spin, the face disappears and reforms—symbolizing confusion, identity, and the changing nature of thought. 

Symbolism

The rotating mechanism also resembles clock gears, referencing Prague’s long history of mechanical art like the famous astronomical clock in Old Town Square. 

Interesting fact
• The sculpture sometimes stops or is removed for maintenance; it has mechanical parts that require repairs. 
• It has become one of the most photographed modern landmarks in Prague.
