As a photographer, I have to defend photoshop.
There’s a lot of discussion about “natural” versus “fake.”
Sure, in the world of selfies and filters, there’s a whole lot of distortion going on.
Perfecting online personas can create unnecessary illusions that lead to distress and disappointment.
And fuel an ego-driven focus on appearance, that only distracts our attention from cultivating skills and pursuits that actually bring long-lasting joy.
Still, there’s nothing that righteous about “unfiltered” images.
As you can see, truly raw images, if the camera is set accordingly, will give a “flat” look.
This means the colours are dull and diluted: a blank canvas.
When we then use photoshop, we add vibrancy, saturation and highlights.
It’s a way photographers showcase their style, and finish their piece.
The edit is the artistry.
