On Thursday, August 28th, Danish band Kill Trip and American groove metal veterans SKINLAB "Official" performed at Rocken Aalborg in Aalborg. The show was part of Skinlab’s ongoing European tour, which also includes several stops in Denmark, making them one of the biggest international names ever to play at Rocken. Unfortunately, this wasn’t reflected in the turnout — the Thursday night crowd was modest, maybe because Rocken is usually closed on Thursdays and there were also free concerts in town due to the Aalborg Regatta.
That didn’t stop either band from delivering an intense and engaging performance. Both Kill Trip and Skinlab seemed to enjoy themselves on and off stage, creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere around the venue.
Kill Trip, hailing from Horsens and Odense, opened the evening with their gritty blend of sludge and hardcore. Their heavy riffs, raw energy, and nihilistic lyrical themes set a dark but powerful tone for the night. Despite being relatively new on the Danish scene, they’ve already earned strong reviews for albums like Bury the Sky (2019) and Sifting the Ashes (2023), and their live performance showed why: uncompromising, heavy, and unpolished in the best way possible.
Then came Skinlab, fronted by bassist/vocalist Steev Esquivel. Formed in San Francisco in 1994, Skinlab is known for their crushing groove metal sound, heard on albums such as Bound, Gagged and Blindfolded (1997), Disembody: The New Flesh (1999), and their latest release Venomous (2019). On stage in Aalborg, Esquivel spoke frequently between songs, giving background stories and connecting personally with the audience. One memorable moment came near the end of the set, when a girl walked into the bar with a bouquet of flowers, just to use the restroom. Esquivel quickly quipped, “You can put those flowers on my stepdad’s grave,” before the band launched into “Coward” — a track about his real father. The crowd may have been small, but the performance was deeply personal and powerful, and those who were there witnessed something special.
I had the chance to photograph both concerts, and you can see my pictures from the evening below.
