It's been exactly one year, since I found myself stranded in paradise.

At the end of February 2020, when Covid-19 was just a quickly spreading virus in some parts of the world, I touched down in one of my favorite places on earth: Panama's Bocas del Toro archipelago.🌴🌊

We visited old friends, made new ones, and didn't really get all fuelled up by media coverage since we tried to be offline from our devices as much as possible and enjoy the moment.🍹

The first time I realized something was badly wrong was when I had a show for my art cancelled back home, and even the local brass band called off their concert. Bits and pieces of the turmoil dropped into my inbox. The most disturbing one was a cancellation by my airline of my return flight. Lucky they gave me a link to rebook... only to then send me another cancellation - without a link to rebook. 😳

Since I couldn't change anything, I tried to enjoy my time under the swaying palm trees at the beautiful eco-lodge of . 🏖️Amazing hospitality, 3-walled-rooms with ocean views as soon as you wake up and some of the best food far and wide by the chef Vincent made it hard to believe the world around us was falling apart.

But the next couple of days, the drama would unfold...

Sailing around the stunning Mergui archipelago.

If you really want to see an island paradise that is barely visited by foreigners, check out the Mergui Archipelago in the very south of Myanmar. Empty white sand beaches, clean waters and sea gypsies make this one of the most amazing places I ever got to visit.

More memories of the unique people I met in Myanmar.

Seeing the images on the news these days, I almost can't believe the courage the Burmese people are showing in the face of the brutal military attacks against their peaceful demonstrations. I have the utmost respect for them and hope the country will return to peace again soon. 🙏

Sunrise is balloon rise in Bagan.

At least it was for the past couple of years, before the military coup happened in January. Let's hope this awesome sight with so many balloons returns again soon, and the people of Myanmar get back the democracy they had fought so hard for for such a long time.

This 1.2 km long structure was built across Taungthaman Lake around 1850 and is believed to be one of the oldest and longest teakwood bridges in the world.

Getting here was one of the biggest, but probably most rewarding adventures I had in Myanmar.
No bus company seemed to be willing to take us from Yangon on this 24 h journey as foreigners (most visitors take an inland flight and a boat trip to get there, and maybe there were some government rules about this), so we decided to just show up at the main bus terminal at 5 am. With some convincing and haggling we finally found a bus that would take us.

Crammed in the back between tons of boxes and good humoured locals we started the drive. It was accompanied by deafening Burmese soap operas on the one tv screen, regular hourly stops to pour water on the engine and replace some belts, and luckily a few official stops that allowed us to taste local food and move our tired legs and bottoms. 😄

In the middle of the night, we were all asked to leave the bus as it had to cross a bridge that couldn't carry it all. So we walked across and were glad it didn't take off with our backpacks and without us.

The scariest moment was probably when our bus got stopped in the darkness and military (or was it police? 🤔) stopped the bus, took everybody's passport and left with it for a while. We knew we weren't doing anything illegal, but still... one never knows in a country run by the military.Luckily it was all good.

Over the course of almost a week we shared the countless temples and pagodas of Mrauk U with only a handful of foreigners, met so many kind locals and had a blast in this so little known, historical place.
