I’m often asked where is my favorite place I’ve ever traveled, and I always come back to Scotland. I’ve visited four times, and feel like I have barely scratched the surface.
If you’re planning a trip, here are a few not-to-miss spots (many on or around Skye). And if you want the full route, you can grab my 10-day itinerary on my site.
🏴Glasgow: Hidden Alley, Pollok County Park (highland cows here), dinner at the Buttery
🌺 Luss: my favorite stop between Glasgow and the Isle of Skye. Browse the General Store there for cute souvenirs.
🚤 Oban: An adorable fishing town with greats shops and quaint b&b’s. A jumping off point to the Hebrides.
🚂 Glenfinnan Viaduct: During the summer months, you can glimpses of the Jacobite Express Steam Train (get in place by 10:45) or opt to ride it.
🏰 Eilean Donan Castle: One of Scotland’s most iconic castles, worth a visit when you go to Skye. The best viewpoints are past the castle on the left.
🌺 Portree: The capital town and main village on the Isle of Skye with colorful buildings accenting the water.
🏰 Dunvegan Castle: Scotland’s oldest continuously inhabited castle. Stunning grounds, boat/kayak tours of the loch leave from the back (schedule in advance).
🥾 Old Mann of Storr: This 3.8 km out and back hike has spectacular views from the top. Great family hike.
🐑 Neist Point Lighthouse: There are few options for viewing, from the parking areas, walk up and to the right for faraway views looking down, or opt for the 2.2 kilometer out and back trek (usually among sheep) to see it up close and personal. The scenery around Neist is spectacular.
🏰 Ballindoch Castle & Gardens: Construction started in 1542 and it was built as a home and fortress. Today it remains a home of the Macpherson-Grant Family and a busy working estate.
🦌 Cairngorm National Park/Reindeer Herd: For families, this national park has so much to offer, and our favorite was walking with the reindeer herd.
🏴Edinburgh: Of course you can’t miss the Royal Mile, but I loved Victoria Street and Circus Lane first thing in the morning.
